17.03.07 – On Saturday, March 10, Squared Circle Promotions presented a seven bout card which featured, comebacking, former WBA Heavyweight Champion Bruce Seldon in the main event and several local prospects including Perry Ballard, Ibn Ali and Juan Carlos Robles. The standing room only crowd was treated to a fine evening of fistic fury at the Best Western Banquet Hall in Winchester, VA..
Former WBA Heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon scored a crushing second-round knockout over Jay Sweetman of Smyrna, DE. in the main event. Time was 1:56. Seldon, a superbly conditioned 230 pounds, controlled the bout throughout with his sharp accurate punches and ring generalship. Sweetman, 229 pounds, was aggressive throughout throwing, and on occasion landing, power punches in hopes of pulling off the upset. After clearly winning the first round Seldon stepped up the activity even more in round 2. Bruce drove Sweetman into the corner and unleashed a fearsome combination of punches ultimately sending Sweetman through the ropes with a left hook to end matters. Seldon appears serious about this comeback evidenced by the tremendous condition he was in. He weighed 6 pounds LIGHTER than he did when he beat Tony Tucker for the WBA title in 1995 and over 30 pounds lighter than he did during his attempted comeback in 2004. Seldon, who scored his second knockout win in 28 days, is now 37-6, 33 KO’s. Sweetman falls to 7-5, 3 KO’s.
Perry Ballard, Hedgesville, WV, scored a fourth-round TKO over Travis Clayborne of Columbia, SC in a Junior Middleweight bout. Ballard’s all action swarming style proved to be too much for Clyborne. Ballard is now 19-1, 15 KO’s. Clayborne is 14-36-1, 8 KO’s.
Ibn Ali, the nephew of Muhammad Ali, won an unanimous decision over Derrick Holsinger in a Cruiserweight battle. Ali, who appeared to be looking for the knockout from the opening bell, was able to knock down his opponent twice but Holsinger was able to survive to the final bell. Ali is now 10-2-1, 8 KO’s. Holsinger drops to 2-6-2.
Undefeated Junior Welterweight prospect Antonio Espinosa of West New York, NJ won a controversial six-round split decision over veteran Reggie Sanders of Fort Wayne, IN. Espinosa, despite being knocked down, was able to improve to 8-0, 1 KO while Sanders falls to 12-38-4, 2 KO’s.
“JC Superstar” Juan Carlos Robles of Waynesboro, VA won a six-round unanimous decision over veteran Lenzie Morgan of Youngstown, OH. In an entertaining tilt the younger Robles was able to outwork the veteran spoiler, Morgan, on the inside with his superior work rate. Robles remains undefeated at 8-0, 4 KO’s. Morgan falls to 14-30-3, 7 KO’s.
Super Middleweight Mike Carrigan stopped Lennox McFadyen of Brighton, MI at 1:43 of the second round. Carrigan is 3-0, 3 KO’s. McFadyen is 0-3.
Kompa (Kay) Koroma scored a spectacular first-round KO over Columbus, OH’s Brian Gadson in a Junior Welterweight matchup. Time of the knockout was 1:04. Koroma improves to 3-0, 2 KO’s while Gadson lost his pro debut.
