Jamie Cox Makes Big Pact

08.05.07 – Ambitious young boxing star Jamie Cox has made a pact with Swindon Town: Win the Premiership title and I’ll win a World title. Cox, the 2006 Commonwealth Games Champion, saw the Robins secure promotion to League One after their 1-1 draw against Walsall last weekend and he hopes they will keep up their good form over the next few seasons to crack the Premier League..

The 19-year-old hot-shot starts his campaign to become Swindon’s first ever world champion when he makes his highly anticipated professional debut on Saturday 26th May at the ExCeL London against an opponent to be confirmed shortly.

And Cox, who is trained by former WBC World Super-Middleweight Champion Richie Woodhall, hopes that it will culminate in him bringing a world title home at the same time as the Wiltshire club bags the Premiership trophy.

“ I’m chuffed to bits that they are back in League One because they have battled hard all season to earn their promotion. Boss Paul Sturrock has done a tremendous job with the team and from now on I hope it will be onwards and upwards for them until they reach the Premier League,” Said Cox.

“ Later this month I will take my first steps on the long, hard, road towards winning a world title when I make my professional debut which I’m really excited about. All the lads in the team are all invited to be ringside and I would love for us to experience the hard paths towards winning titles together; me becoming world champion and the Robins winning the Premiership title,”

Top promoter Frank Warren regards Cox as one of the best amateurs to turn professional in recent years and has billed him as the hottest thing to come out of Swindon since glamour girl/TV presenter Melinda Messenger.

He added, “Swindon is not a massive town and is well know for Melinda Messenger and Billie Piper but to have two champions in sport would be a magnificent and proud achievement.”
