10.05.07 – East End boxing brothers Kevin and Vinny Mitchell aim to succeed where other famous British fighting brothers have failed – to become the first to hold World titles at the same time. Although there have been mixed results with the Turpins (Randolph and Dick), Finnegans (Chris and Kevin), Coopers (Henry and Jim), McKenzies (Duke, Clinton and Winston) and Hattons (Ricky and Matthew) no British siblings have achieved this feat yet..
On the world scene more recently Juan Manuel Marquez won the WBC World Super-Featherweight title to join Rafael, the WBC Super-Bantamweight Champion, as the only current reigning world champion brothers.
Kevin, 23, and Vinny, 19, have set themselves the goal of becoming the first brothers to do this from Britain.
The dynamic Dagenham duo feature on the same card for the first time on Saturday 26th May at the ExCeL London when Kevin challenges Alexander Hrulev for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Super-Featherweight title and Vinny has his second professional fight.
Kevin, undefeated in 23 fights with 15 knockouts, said, “If great fighting brothers like the Turpins and Finnegans couldn’t do it then it is something that me and Vinny will try our hardest to achieve. When I turned professional I set a goal for myself to hold three world titles in three different weights classes and that still is my dream but to be a world champion with my brother would be fantastic. That is still a little way off but I’m making myself know on the world stage and I’m ranked number six by the WBO so I will be knocking on the door of the top guys soon. Me and Vinnie have always trained together and pushed each other all the way so there’s no reason why we can’t hold world titles together.”
‘Vicious’ Vinny, who beat Shaun Walton on his debut, added, “I’m well up for creating a bit of history with Kevin. Ever since we were kids we said we would be world champions together and that is something I really want to achieve. Our mum will be well proud! Kevin’s got a headstart on me in terms of fights and I’ve got some catching up to do but I’m sure that by the time I reach world title level and start challenging for belts Kevin will already have two or three titles under him. It’s big ambitions for me seeing as I’m only having my second fight but it’s the dream that spurring me on.”
