26.08.07 – By Tony Nobbs: Local Israel Kani won a unanimous ten round decision over Thaland’s Yodchanoi at the Novatel Twin Waters Resort in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, on Saturday night. In a good fight, the action was touch and go during the first five rounds before Kani’s fitness told and he pulled away as the fight progressed. A tired Yodchanoi, a late sub, was dropped by a hard right in the final round.
Kani, 34, formerly rated in the Australian top ten has now won two bouts after a lengthy break. Yodchanoi, 27, has fought in Australia several times, yet to record a win, but he is no slouch. A month ago he decked
Aussie super middleweight champ Les Sherrington in the opening round before being knocked out in the second. He proved a willing opponent and will be welcomed back. The lanky Kani, as usual, was all class. Prior to the fight Israel gave Yodchanoi a pair of boxing trunks to keep, as he had left them in Thailand.
Kani, now 7-1-1, Yodchanai, reportedly, 11-7. At the weigh in Saturday morning 11 am, Kani 75.2, Yodchanoi 75.6 kg, super middleweights. The Thai said he shed 5 kg (12 lb) in three days.
The final scorecards 98-93, 99-90 & 100-89, were not a true indication of the competitiveness.
In a dull six rounder, Robert Toomey, from Dubbo, NSW, outpointed Kani gym mate Andrew Gosden, unanimous, 58-56 x 3, junior middleweight. Switch hitting Toomey was too elusive and had the local missing very wildly on several occasions. He fought southpaw the final two rounds and was on the back foot each moment of those six minutes. Toomey (Aust # 6) is now 4-1, Gosden (Aust # 7) 3-3-2. This was Robert’s second decision over Andrew. Weights Toomey 68.6, Gosden 67.00. Toomey is due to fight former PABA champ Parkpoom in 4 weeks.
In a four rounder, body shots took out Michael Thaiday in the second in his bout with pro debuting Trent Whermer. 21 year old Whermer, a former Australian amateur champ is trained by former Aussie pro champ Chris Mc Cullen at Logan, south of Brisbane and looks a handy prospect. Weights, Whermer 61.4, Thaiday 64.6.
Les Crowe, a former State champ and Australian title challenger boxed a four round exhibition with another state champion Scott Gaby. There were four amateur bouts to start the show.
Promoter Jamie Myer was happy with his first show in this area and is looking to return in November. A good crowd came out to support after the Sunshine Coast had been hit with it’s worse down fall, reportedly, in 100 years.
