16.08.07 – WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Maccarinelli will be out to reclaim his Kilvey Hill Cement Run title this Sunday (19 August). The hammer-fisted Swansea star came third in the charity event last year and has even upped his training following his hard-fought victory over former WBC World Champion Wayne Braithwaite last month.
The Kilvey Cement Run is held in honour of its founder, the late amateur boxer Nigel Page. Nigel’s daughter Kirsty Page was the inspiration behind the charity event when she suffered complications during her birth at Singleton Hospital 18 years ago.
The gruelling endurance test involves running up the steep Kilvey Hill in Boneymaen with a 50-kilo bag of cement strapped to the back of competitors.
Money raised from the event this year will go to the Swansea based Wales Air Ambulance.
Big Mac set a blistering record of 11 minutes 36 seconds in his first attempt at the event seven years ago but has not been able to reclaim the crown but he believes this could be his year.
“They say charity doesn’t hurt but this bloody hurts!” Said Maccarinelli.
“I’ve put as much training into this as I would for a world title fight and I hope it pays off this time!”
“I like to keep in good physical shape when I’m not in training and to do this event and raise money for charity is great,”
“I only fought last month and had a career best win over Braithwaite but since then I’ve also competed in the Great Wales Run in aid of Cystic Fibrosis,”
“I’m really competitive by nature and winning is everything to me so I’m going all out to reclaim my Kilvey Hill Cement Run title.”
“The event has been getting more and more popular each year and it always goes towards a fantastic cause and this year we will raise more than ever before.”
This year’s event will leave from the Bonymaen Inn in Bonymaen at 1pm on Sunday.
