07.09.07 – By Fritz Drexel: WBA female flyweight boxing champion Susi Kentikian (18-0, 14 KOs) made easy work of her British challenger “Sugar” Shanee Martin (8-4, 4 KOs), stopping her in the 3rd round of a scheduled 10-round title bout tonight at Burg-Wächter-Castello in Dusseldorf, Germany. Kentikian, 19, dominated the entire bout and getting hit only occasionally by her overmatched opponent..
In the 3rd round, Kentikian nailed Martin with a perfect right hand that drove her to the canvas. After Martin got up off the canvas, the referee Giuseppe Quartarone thought better of letting her continue and put a stop to the bout at 1:14 of the 3rd round.
In the first round, Kentikian immediately took off after Martin, backing her up and nailing her with hard combinations.
It was evident early, that Kentikian was both faster and much more powerful of a puncher showing that she could land quick shots before Martin could even think of responding. For the most part, Martin, 25, was unable to land anything in the first round. She made no attempts at offense and spent the better part of the round taking head shots from Kentikian’s numerous hooks and jabs.
In the 2nd round, Martin began to use her jab to try and keep Kentikian on the outside. It was effective only sporadically, because the 5’1″ Kentikian would quickly dart past Martin’s jab and get inside where she would land her blazing fast combinations. Martin, however, continued to stick to her jab rather than using her four inch size advantage to land any power shots. In between rounds, Martin’s nose was badly bleeding and she looked exhausted even though the fight was still at an early stage.
In the 3rd round, Kentikian began to land harder shots as she made prolonged attacks on Martin, frequently snapping her head back with hooks. Once again, Martin stopped punching completely and mostly absorbed head shots thrown by Kentikian. Finally, Kentikian, sensing the end was near, drove Martin across the ring with a series of punches, ending with a powerful right hand that crashed into Martin’s face, causing her head to whiplash to the side from the impact and sending her to the canvas. Martin was able to make it to her feet, but the referee seeing something in her eyes, stopped the bout.
With this victory, Kentikian “The Killer Queen” successfully defends her flyweight title for the third time since winning it in March 2007.
