14.09.07 – By Ron Hansen: In a rematch between two bitter foes, WBO Inter-Continental super middleweight boxing champion Jurgen Brahmer (30-1, 24 KOs) KO’d his German challenger Mario Veit (49-4, 23 KOs) in the fourth round on Saturday night at the Stadthalle, Rostock, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The bout was especially important for Brahmer, whom had lost a 12-round majority decision to Veit in May 27, 2006, Brahmer’s only loss in his career. This time, however, Brahmer left nothing to chance, as he twice knocked Veit down during the bout which was eventually stopped after the second knockdown at 0:47 of the fourth round.
Both fighters mainly spent most of the first round jabbing, and staying within a respectful distance of each other. Brahmer, a southpaw and the shorter fighter at 5’11” compared to the 6’3″ Veit, was the aggressor throughout. Veit kept a jab constantly in Brhamer’s face in the round. However, Veit was hurt late in the round after getting hit with two strong jabs from Brahmer, sending Veit stumbling backwards for a second.
It seemed as if Veit wasn’t expecting the second jab to be thrown, as it seemed to catch him by complete surprise. Before Veit could get his wits about him, Brahmer pounded him with three hard shots to the head immediately prior to the round ending.
In the second round, Brahmer started fast, landing jab, right hook and then left hook to the head of Veit. However, Veit immediately started pumping out his excellent jab which he then used to keep Brahmer relatively under control and at a safe distance for the remainder of the round. I did give the round to Brahmer, though, because he had landed the more stronger and accurate blows in the round.
In the 3rd round, the round was mostly even with both fighters exchanging excellent jabs at a distance until, however, Brahmer suddenly opened up with a powerful combination late in the round, hurting Veit and sending him to the canvas after with a left hand. Veit got up, looking shaken, and was met with a brief flurry from Brahmer before time ran out in the round.
Brahmer wasted little time getting to business in the fourth round, pouring it on from the start as he tried to take out a Veit with every shot. After several landing several hard punches that backed Veit up towards the ropes, Brahmer unleashed a four punch combination that sent Veit down for the final time. The referee Andre Van Grootenbrue then moved in and stopped the bout at 0:47 of the 4th round.
