The „Icon of Womens Boxing“, known as the „Box-Queen“ Regina Halmich (53-1-1 (16)) will step into the ring for the last time in her hometown of Karlsruhe /Germany. In her 45th title fight she will jeopardize her WIBF belt at flyweight for the last time before retiring and ending an extremely successful boxing career. This fight night at the dm-arena in Karlsruhe will be a special moment in the boxing history, not only for her but also for the boxing fans in her hometown..
13 years and 9 months after her pro debut on March 4th 1994, it was Regina Halmich’s wish to return to her hometown where she started her career. Universum boss Klaus – Peter Kohl had no problems in making this wish come true. This night will be a glorious goodbye for Regina Halmich who will turn 31 just 8 days before this event.
Regina Halmich, who will have her 56th pro fight, will defend her WIBF championship belt at flyweight against Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer. Again it will be another tough challenge.
In the style of a queen, Regina Halmich was taken to today’s press conference by a carriage drawn by two horses: „It is a wonderful feeling that I can have my last fight here in Karlsruhe as I want to underline my connection to my hometown. I have a very strong opponent with Hagar Shmoulefeld. For sure it will be an interesting fight and a tough challenge, that’s what my fans would always like see. It will definitely be my last fight unless I get injured. So there is no backdoor for a comeback, which will never happen. I won’t retire with a defeat. The media interest is already extremely high so that the next 2 to 3 weeks will be an intense programme for me, with a lot of interviews and others enquiries. After that I will go to Berlin and prepare for this big fight and I’m hoping that I won’t be disturbed. In the week ahead of the fight there will be the normal procedures with a press conference, a public work out and the official weigh-in where I certainly will be. My hometown can definitely expect the biggest fight of all time!”
Also present at today’s presser was Halmich’s long time companion and Coach Torsten Schmitz: “Hagar Shmoulefeld will come to Germany to win. We know her strengths and weaknesses. It was Regina’s wish to have to strong opponent for her last fight and Karlsruhe is the best place for it. Everybody knows what for a media interest we will have.
We had eleven wonderful and successful years and for me regina could still fight for another three to four years. I respect her decision and I won’t talk into her to change it.”
The Israeli Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer (13-4-3 (2)) is already preparing for this event and for sure, the WIBF Interconti Champion at Jr. Bantamweight will be a tough challenge for Halmich. The 24 year old from Tel-Aviv lost against the Hungarian World Champion Reka Krempf in June 2005 by marginal decision. In January 2006 she had another tough battle with the current WIBF World Champion at Jr. Flyweight Julia Sahin and lost again by a split decision.
The other fights of this legendary „Universum Champions Night“ will be annouced shortly.
