Bring on Vitali Klitschko versus Sam Peter! The Winner must face Maskaev

Dave Domenico: First, let me say this. Vitali Klitschko should get one last chance to make a fight. If he is injured again and delay’s another bout he must retire for good. With that said, let us now focus on Saturday’s WBC interim championship match between Sam Peter and Jameel McCline. The fight was surprisingly interesting and showed that Sam Peter is quite beatable and limited.. Mccline demonstrated again that he is a good fighter who just cannot quite cut the mustard when it counts. With Peter being the winner (barely), he still needs to prove himself as a serious champion which bring us to the next step in a division that’s been in a hurricane of confusion in recent months. With all the injuries and delays we now must proceed as follows. We now have Sam Peter as the WBC interim champion. The nest step is for him to face Vitali Klitschko early next year. Since Vitali has stated that he wished to challenge for the belt early next year in his most recent press statement, he should be given one final opportunity to face Peter. For those of you who object to this article let me explain my position. Oleg Maskaev is the rightful WBC champion, we know that. However, due to his injuries he is on the sidelines for the moment.

In the mean time the most interesting, promising and financially sound fight that can be made is Sam Peter versus Vitali Klischko. Who honestly would not want to see that fight? It would be great no matter how you slice it. Sam Peter’s status is in question since he was almost taken out by a fighter who was never known for having a big punch. Despite all the hype, Peter looked vulnerable and limited and he really needs to prove himself. So, why not prove himself against Vitali? Vitali was the champion emeritus, and was promised the chance to get right back in there by the WBC despite who thinks it is right or not. For those who object, Vitali is not really getting an immediate title shot is he? He would be facing Peter for the interim championship and the winner would then have to face Oleg Maskaev to be crown the true WBC heavyweight champion.

This is a fair and logical solution to the problem. Moreover, it’s a great build up and can truly generate the interest needed in a division that has been “on the ropes” for a while. Can Sam Peter show he is the real deal? Can Vitali Klitschko finally get back to form and show that he is the man to beat? Once they settle business can Oleg Maskaev step up to the plate and face the winner to show his merit? Either way we have the potential for some fan-pleasing big money fights. I say this to the fighters, promoters and fans; If any of you have any integrity at all than bring on Sam Peter versus Vitali Klitschko, with the winner facing Oleg Maskaev to crown the linear WBC champion. Lets hope this comes off for the good of boxing and is not killed by anymore injuries, delays and power plays by promoters.
