Bronx, NY Dec 07, 2007 Terrance “The Heat” Cauthen (32-4, 9KO’s) and Sechew “Iron Horse” Powell (22-1, 13KO’s) hooked Wednesday December 5th in a memorable battle for the IBF #1 position at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida..
The fight was a barnburner from the opening bell, which was a surprise to boxing fans given each fighter is known for their skills rather than their brawn. Cauthen took it right to Powell as the fighers exchanged freely. Mid-way through the first round, Powell unleashed a devastating right hook which dropped Cauthen for an eight count. Cauthen bravely fought back and was landing clean shots of his own as the bell sounded ending the round.
Cauthen regained his senses and had a strong second round as he once again took the fight to Powell and gave no quarter. The pattern continuted over the next round and a half with Cauthen getting the better of the exchanges, and appeared to have control of the fight in the 4th round.
Powell uncorked a huge left hook that put Cauthen down for a second time and then followed with a flurry of punches prompting referee Telis Assimenios to call an end to things at 2:19 of the fourth round.
Although he came up short, Terrance Cauthen showed the heart and determination of a true champion in what may be among the fights to be considered as one of the fights of the year.
Star Boxing’s top heavyweight prospects Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson and Devin Vargas saw action on the under card. Johnson (18-0-1, 6KO’s) and ranked WBA # 14, displayed quickness and skill that has captured the eye of the boxing industry as an American heavyweight who will be a force to be dealt with. Johnson dominated a game Jermell Barnes (18- 15-2, 4KO’s), over the course of the eight rounds, pitching a shut out 80-72 on all three judges’ cards.
Vargas (14-0, 6KO’s), 2004 Olympic team captain, passed the sternest test in his young career as he pounded out a unanimous decision over tough journeyman Earl Ladson (13-17-1, 7KO’s), winning by scores of 60-54 twice, and 59-55 in a scheduled six round bout.
Vargas and Ladson hooked up in a free-swinging brawl but Vargas displayed too much skill and firepower for Ladson to contend with and took control of the bout. Ladson hung in and tried until the final bell as the crowd appreciated the effort of the two combatants.
Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Warriers Boxing promoted the event in association with the Siminole Hard Rock Arena. The show was broadcasted live on the internet by GOFIGHTLIVE.TV.
