By Christopher Roche, Brickcityboxing.com: On Thursday, December 13, I am cutting short a previous holiday engagement to head over to the Roseland Ballroom and watch three of New York City’s best, undefeated prospects. “Mean” Joe Greene, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and Jorge “The Truth” Teron are all scheduled to do battle in separate bouts, and this end of the year special will foreshadow their progress for 2008..
Greene, who is already ranked by the WBA at middleweight, recently signed with Warriors Boxing and has been featured on ESPN. In the eyes of many observers, Greene is the furthest along of the three prospects, and he has certainly received the most national exposure. Greene is a hard-charging body puncher who gives up a few inches of height to prototypical middleweights such as Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik, but Greene and his team have carefully matched his arsenal to take advantage of his physical makeup. Greene does his best work inside with a devastating body attack and complementary uppercuts. Greene is only 21 years-old, and he is sitting pretty at 16-0, 12 KO’s.
The 24 year-old Quillin is a physically imposing figure who has bounced between middleweight and super-middleweight. Qullin stands at 6’1”, and he has a very sturdy looking frame. His signature knockout punch is a lightning left hook, but he has power in both hands and throws everything with bad intentions. In Quillin’s last live National TV performance he destroyed Mexican Olympian Jose Humberto Corral on the undercard of the David Tua vs. Saul Montana bout. Quillin is currently 15-0, 12 KO’s. After his fights, Quillin treats the fans to chocolates, which he throws from the ring.
Teron, 22, is a multi-time New York City Golden Gloves Champion who is trained by 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist and former world champ Mark Breland. Like Breland, Teron is tall and lean for his division, and he is a classic boxer-puncher. Teron, who stands in at 6’0”, has done most of his work in the lightweight and junior-welterweight divisions. He recently dispatched Don Turner trained Jovann Jones via a fifth round TKO, and his record stands at 18-0-1, 11 KO’s.
Normally, when I am invited to a free, catered event in New York City, I usually go until the final bell. However, this triple threat card at the Roseland is very compelling, and I want to get a glimpse at these potential contenders up close, because they likely will not be fighting on the ballroom circuit much longer. For those in the New York City area looking for something to do before being held hostage by the holidays, I strongly recommend the Roseland as a destination. The card is being promoted by Gotham Boxing along with Ring Promotions.
While it is very difficult to predict if a prospect will transition into a contender and eventually champion, I have seen all three of the aforementioned fighters in person and on television, and I am confident that the fans will get a good glimpse at three future stars.
