Packing the Majestic Star Casino, greater Chicagoland and northwest Indiana On Friday night, Octavius James’ One In A Million Inc. presented their last boxing event of 2007, the “Holiday Boxing Bash.” Hosted by Majestic Star in Gary, Indiana, the casino’s beautifully appointed entertainment pavilion provided the sold-out crowd with a “big fight” atmosphere in an intimate setting. fight fans received the holiday gifts they asked for in a brutal rematch, a minor upset and highly competitive bouts..
In the main event, Gary native and NABC light welterweight champion “Merciless” Mary McGee (13-0, 7 KOs) won a run-away unanimous six-round decision (60-54 three times) in her rematch with Leora Jackson. From the opening bell, McGee was clearly a more skilled boxer, stronger puncher and smarter fighter, but Jackson proved to have a chin of granite, taking power shot after power shot during every round and refusing to go away.
After the bout, McGee said, “She’s (Jackson) a tough girl. Tonight I beat her more convincingly than I did in 2006. Now I’m moving on and will be looking to win another title next year.”
In the evening’s co-main event, Gary’s Jermaine “Too Sweet” White (16-3, 8 KOs) beat Hammond’s Ruben Galvan (27-12-3, 10) by seventh round TKO in another brutal battle. Fighting like the Mexican warrior that he is, or, perhaps was, Galvan absorbed power shot after power shot from White who looked to be in the best form of his career.
“I’ve been training in Las Vegas for the past four months,” White said. “Vegas has given me the opportunity to train and spar with top ten fighters. I’m more skilled, even faster and stronger than ever.”
“Dangerous” Don Moore (14-0-1, 10), also of Gary, faced a tougher than advertised opponent in Reggie Sanders. Moore won a hard-fought unanimous decision and likely learned something in facing the crafty southpaw over eight rounds.
In an upset, light heavyweight Jimmy Perez Jr. (2-1, 1) of Hammond was knocked out in the first round by unheralded Matt Short.
In the event’s opener, Gary’s Frantoine “Tiger” Greenwood (1-0) won his professional debut by unanimous decision over game Tyrone Dowdy. Throughout the bout, Greenwood seemed unfazed by the cut he suffered over his right eye in round one.
