Euro Boxing Roundup: Arena Signs Markus Beyer

By Per Ake Persson: According to a short note in Bild Zeitung, ex-WBC supermiddle champ Markus Beyer has left Sauerland Event for Arena Box Promotion and signed a four fight deal with them. Beyer hasn’t fought since losing to Mikkel Kessler last year. Chris Meyer, CEO, for Sauerland confirms that Beyer´s contract expires December 31 and that no new deal could be struck. An all-German showdown between Beyer and Jurgen Braehmer has been discussed but never got far.

Former WBA and WBC champ Jean Marc Mormeck is sidelined with injuries and won’t be able to return until May or June next year.

Leonard Bundu and Giammario Grassellini fight for the vacant Italian welterweight title March 7 in Firenze.

Aleksander Petkovic, once a big name at cruiser with Universum, and Werner Kreiskott clash for the GBO version of the German heavyweight title tonight (Dec 21) at the Alabama Club in Munich.

When Pro Box Scandinavia promotes their big event in Kampala, Uganda, tomorrow (Dec 22) it´s a big night for Swedish boxing as all the maineventers have Swedish licenses and are based in Stockholm although they hail from Uganda or Tanzania. In the headliners Abdu Tebazalwa fight Obote Ameme and at lightweight Peter Ssemo face Chaurembo Palasa. Both fights are for a minor title. At welter Hassan Ssaku take on Bagaza Mwambene for the vacant ABU belt.

Happy Birthday to former two-time EBU heavy champ Anders “Tiny” Eklund who turns 50 tomorrow (Dec 22). Eklund is currently on sick leave from his job as a carpenter due to a foot injury and it´s been rough of lately for the former champ with his father and two brothers passing away.
