By Moncayo Blackbull – After a couple of disappointing losses to Timothy Bradley and Herman Ngoudjo, Donald Camarena regroups in big fashion by defeating WBO/WBC Latino champion Oscar Leon on June 21st at the National Western Complex in Denver, CO. Camarena up’s his ring record to 19-4 while Leon’s drops to 27-9..
This fight card was billed “The Future” and for this particular fight between Camarena and Leon it was certainly “The opportunity”. The opportunity to get back into the lime light of boxing, for the winner would put himself back into contention. Action in the ring proved each fighter was there to impress!
The contest was one where a true boxing fan can witness a wide spectrum of boxing talent, ring generalship, offence and defensive skills.
Once the contest started, it was not hard to figure out both fighters were on a mission.
Once the feeling out segment of the fight ended you can see the talent on both sides as nice jabs and precise counter punches were landed. The fight even had its share of what fans love to hate… Showboating and the fighters talking to each other, I don’t understand it but I guess the fighters feel it’s a way of intimidation, but it certainly can be a promoter’s nightmare.
The entire contest was filled with great action, which is what we expect when two fighters come to win. Camarena wins the contest with a majority decision, and while Leon takes a loss, he by no means hurt his stock in boxing.
The supporting cast to this event was pleasing to say the least, undefeated Marvin Cordova was forced to fight in a no-decision exhibition bout against Geoffery Sprurell when his opponent was unable to secure a visa permit to enter the U.S. The exhibition was action packed as both fighters fought with high intensity refusing to back down from each other.
Anthony Turner, again showed if you are going to step into the ring against him, then be prepared to fight. Turner had the crowd on their feet as he knocked out Eric Bradford in the first round.
Jose Morales stopped Kris Coe in the fourth round, as Tim Kane did the same against Ryan Proctor. In a female crowd pleasing exhibition, Lillian Camarena returned to the ring against Brittany Cruz.
Former NFL Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Jevon Langford will have to wait for his comeback to the boxing ring as his opponent from New Mexico Jody Ortiz was a no-show.
Aurelio Martinez and Barry Fey are right back to work preparing for a September televised or PPV event, stay tuned!
