By Sebastian Swiecznik: After all the bad-mouthing and hatred in the pre-fight, Edison Miranda showed some class after the fight giving Abraham credits for his performance. Now, nearly six weeks after the bout, Germany’s finest trainer Ulli Wegner also got some warm words for the eccentric Colombian in his column of a German boxing magazine:
“If Miranda would be in my hands I would make a great champion out of him. He’s a born champion. He has so much good promises: self-confidence, good reflexes, he’s explosive. But he’s guided wrong in training. He’s a talented guy, but his defensive behavior is not developed. He can’t access his whole potential.”
Honestly I would love to see Wegner and Miranda work together and I really think the Colombian would improve fast under the guidance of the German trainer legend. Miranda does know everything about pitting, but he really has to improve his defensive skills if he would like to make it one day, and Wegner is a master of the “turtle shell” defense.
But lets be realistic. It’s nearly impossible that “Pantera” and Wegner will join one day. I think Miranda got to much pride to work with Sauerland, after the things that happened to him about two years ago in Germany. Beside of that, I really think Miranda could make it over here, if he would give it a shot. The ARD normally broadcasts three fights per event, and with his aggressive style and his well known reputation as a knockout fighter (even among the German sport fans), Miranda would quickly earn one of these three spots, which, of course, is also associated with good money.
The guy Wegner has already transformed into a champion, Arthur Abraham, will fight the tough and respected Raul Marquez in his next fight on October 4 in Bamberg, Germany. After that Wegner would love to put “King Arthur” in with the division’s finest: Kelly Pavlik.
“Kelly Pavlik is the super champion. You have to respect that and you have to take your head of in regard to his willingness to give everything every time he steps into the ring… But I’m sure that Pavlik won’t last twelve rounds with Abraham. After a bout with Pavlik, Abraham would likely move up in weight. Right now a fight against Felix Sturm doesn’t get our attention, because we want to make it the hard way. We want to fight guys like Calzaghe, who hopefully doesn’t retire soon. A fight between my boy Arthur and Calzaghe would be one of the greatest fights at super middleweight of all time… But fights against apparently unbeatable guys like Calzaghe, who you have to respect for his accomplishments, are just some dreams for the future. First, as I say before, we have to become super champion at middleweight.”
