Brähmer-Garay Nov 22, Julia Sahin Back In Action Sept 27

Finally he will get his world title shot. Universum fighter Jürgen Brähmer, Germany’s light heavyweight contender for the world title, will challenge Argentinian WBA champion Hugo Hernan Garay. The fight was scheduled for October 18 at the Freiberger Arena in Dresden but has been postponed due to an injury by Garay. He suffered the sprain of his left ankle on a training run and has to recover for three weeks before he can get back to training..

It has been pushed back for another four weeks until November 22 and the event will now take place at the StadtHalle in Rostock as the original venue was already booked for the new date.

Jürgen Brähmer has to wait patiently for his wolrd title shot

Brähmer says having his long awaited title shot pushed back four weeks makes him even more motivated. “On account of the special situation at super middleweight with super champion Joe Calzaghe, I had to wait a long time for a world championship chance. It will arrive now in (an extra) four weeks and no more. I’m more fit and motivated than ever. Too bad that it didn’t work out for Dresden in October, but I look forward to Rostock. I already had one of the most important victories in my career there in the Stadthalle against Mario Veit.”

Brähmer, who had waited with his coach Michael Timm a long time for this chance, is the official challenger in this world title bout in his newly adapted weight class. Until the end of 2007 Brähmer (31-1, 25 KOs) fought at super middleweight and was highly rated throughout the rankings. He stepped up a weight class and he is now compaining at light heavyweight where he is rated #2 of the WBA rankings. This certainly underlines he great boxing skills.

His opponent, the Argentinean world champion Hugo Hernan Garay (31-3, 17 KOs) is a typical south american fighter and a very difficult and strong challenger. He is well known to German fight fans, having twice challenged WBO light heavy king Zsolt Erdei in Dortmund in 2004 and again in a rematch in Hamburg in 2005. Brähmer’s stablemate Erdei won both both battles and defended his WBO belts by a margin.

Garay finally took his third attempt this earlier year by winning the world title in Bueros Aires against Yuri Barashian. He claimed the vacant WBA belt by unanimous decision which was relinquished by the now retired Australian Danny Green.

Brähmer stated at an earlier press conference how excited he is about the upcoming challenge: “It’s finally my first world title chance as a professional. I have waited and worked toward this for years. I’m fully confident that I can now fulfill my dream. Clearly I must utilize my technical advantages against this strong world champion.”

His trainer Michael Timm added: “This will be a wide open fight against the Argentinian. He’s not the sharpest boxer so Jürgen’s better technical abilities are the decisive factor. A fighter must be able to box, a boxer must be able to fight. Jürgen will take this to heart.”

Additional title fights on the ‘Universum Champions Night’ in Rostock will be announced in the next few weeks. The ZDF will broadcast the Brähmer fight live.

Julia „Sunshine“ Sahin defends her WIBF belt in Hamburg

In addition to the “heavy guys” headlining the September 27 “Universum Champions Night” event at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, including Firat Arslan vs. Guillermo Jones for the WBA cruiserweight championship and Vladimir Virchis vs. Juan Carlos Gomez in a WBC heavyweight eliminator), fight fans in attendance will also have a chance to see the lightest fighter in the Universum stable.

It was announced today that unbeaten WIBF junior flyweight world champion Julia “Sunshine” Sahin (20-0, 2 KOs) will defend her belt against Esmeralda Moreno (9-4, 3 KOs) of Mexico.

Sahin, who has been preparing for the bout for the past few weeks in Hamburg with trainer Michael Timm, commented: “I’m especially glad to represent women’s boxing on such a high-class event and to defend my title for the first time in Hamburg. I’ve already seen Esmeralda Moreno fight against my stable colleague Alesia Graf in November in Karlsruhe. She is a typical Central American, never gives up and is dangerously unorthodox.”
