Angulo Lays A Hurtin’ On Tsurkan! Gamboa strikes again

Alfredo AnguloTEMECULA, CALIF. (October 4, 2008) — BOW WOWSER! Undefeated junior middleweight ALFREDO “Perro” ANGULO scored his 10th consecutive knockout victory tonight, recording a 10th-round TKO over Andrey Tsurkan in a battle of Top-10 contenders. The fight was the star attraction of “Night of the Rising Stars II,” the tripleheader broadcast live from Pechanga Resort & Casino on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Ringside Ticket, the broadcast also featured Sergio Diaz (44-1-1, 24 KOs), capturing the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super welterweight title via a TKO 8 of Alex Bunema (30-6-2, 16 KOs), and 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa (14-0, 11 KOs), scoring a second-round knockout over the vastly more experienced Marcos Ramirez (25-1, 16 KOs) in a battle of undefeated contenders.

Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs), a 2004 Mexican Olympian, proved to be the star of the night as he went toe-to-toe with Tsurkan (26-4, 17 KOs), seamlessly switching from orthodox to southpaw while showering Tsurkan, world-rated No. 9 by the WBC and No. 12 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), with powershots. Angulo is currently rated No. 6 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 10 by the WBC and No. 12 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

“I was impressed with Tsurkan’s resilience and his strength, but I knew I was wearing him down,” said Angulo. “I wish his corner had stopped the fight sooner. I was very pleased with my performance. Now I’d like to look for higher rated contenders to get me closer to a world title shot. I think Juliet Cesar Chavez, Jr. would be an incredible all-Mexican super welterweight fight…unless his daddy won’t let him play with dogs. After that, let’s go to Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick’s and take on John Duddy. I’ll move up to middleweight for that one.”

Gamboa strikes again

“El Ciclon” recovers from knockdown to blow away Ramirez

The Gamboa-Mania continues! In his second appearance at HBO’s Boxing After Dark Yuriorkis Gamboa once more thrilled the audience with a spectacular knockout victory over previously unbeaten Marcos Ramirez (now 25-1, 16 kos).

“El Ciclon de Guantanamo” was knocked down by an elbow shot in the first round. Gamboa recovered quickly and came back to overwhelm Ramirez with his enormous speed and irresistible power, sending his opponent to the canvas with a stunning uppercut before finishing him off after 1:41 minute in the second.

“I was not really hurt by the knockdown”, said Gamboa after the fight. “I knew that I would beat Ramirez. I feel great and I want to go on to become champion of the world.”

It was Gamboa’s 12th win in his 12th pro-fight including 10 knockouts. “El Ciclon” was rated on #3 (WBA), #4 (WBC) and #5 (WBO) in the world rankings before the fight. Now a title shot could be next…

“We are already negotiating with different world champions”, states promoter Ahmet Öner. “Fact is that HBO wants to go on with Gamboa. I am pretty sure that we will agree on a date and opponent soon. Yuri is just incredible. He is without a doubt the most exciting prospect in the sport; the people just love his spectacular style. And we all want to see him go for a title.”
