by James Slater – Today in London, heavyweights David Haye and Monte Barrett came face-to-face for the last time before they get in the ring on Saturday night, as they attended the “Two Gunz Vs. One Hayemaker” final press conference. And things were a whole lot different from the initial press conference the two men engaged in a few weeks back.
Then, the two men were respectful of one another, the mood was light and there was no bad blood to speak of. Today, however, the press conference, in the words of a Setanta Sports commentator, “Turned the air blue.” Having to have it’s live T.V coverage cut short because of the bad language, the conference was heated to say the least.
The problems began when Monte Barrett started to complain about the way he has been treated since arriving in the U.K. “Two Gunz” claims Hayemaker promotions have not shown him the respect a fighter deserves, and top of the list in his complaints is the fact that his hotel room is way too small and the he has not been afforded the services of a chauffeur.. These complaints are proof, Haye believes, of the big fight having gotten to Barrett.
Now with some genuine needle between the two men, Haye is convinced he will emerge the winner in smashing and explosive fashion.
The two men gave individual interviews after the conference.
“After all the bitching and moaning he just did in there (at the Press conference held today), I think it’s obvious Barrett’s getting his excuses ready,” Haye said. “So that when he gets knocked spark out he will have his excuses as to why. He’s getting absolutely smashed to bits. This guy’s not going to beat me.”
Barrett, looking relaxed, had his own opinion on things.
“It’s not how bad the hotel is,” Monte said when asked if that was what angered him. “It’s about living up to what you say, to be a man of your word. That’s what it’s about. This is Haye’s first real promotion and you’d think they’d do everything in style, and take care of their fighters like Oscar De La Hoya [promotions] do. It [the so-called bad treatment] has fired me up, but I knew what I was dealing with before I got on the plane. But business is business and it has to be taken care of.”
Barrett was then told about Haye’s prediction and his dream of fighting Wladimir Klitschko afterwards.
“I have a heavyweight title dream of my own, do you want to hear it?,” Monte said. “I want to fight Vitali Klitschko after I KO David Haye. Haye is an ordinary fighter. Just like I said before I fought Dominick Guinn – even though Emanuel Steward said Guinn was the next great heavyweight. I said he was ordinary. David Haye’s ordinary too. He’s an impostor.”
Monte was then asked for his own final prediction and how he is looking forward to Saturday night’s fight.
“I’m elated,” Barrett said with a smile. “I’m ecstatic. I’m ready to go to war. I love my job.”
Whoever wins on November 15th, it looks sure to be explosive!
