Going down a few weight divisions, unbeaten 22-year-old Kell Brook, a welterweight superstar in the making, was also busy making a statement – on Friday night. Another big puncher, Brook made his own headlines in Scotland. – Below is this writer’s fight report of the British 147 pound title fight..
This past Friday night, in Glasgow, Scotland, unbeaten 22-year-old Sheffield man Kell “Kid” Brook emerged as a new British boxing star in the making, as he brutally annihilated 30-year-old Scot Kevin Mcintyre in a single round to make the first defence of his British welterweight title.
Decking a shell-shocked Mcintyre three times with devastating head shots, Brook gave referee Victor Loughlin no choice but to stop the bout. The time was 2 minutes exactly of round number 1, and poor Mcintyre was given no chance at all to get into the fight.
Improving to 18-0(11), the man who says he will be the new Naseem Hamed, made a very good start in his attempt. For Mcintyre, who fell to 26-6 (8), it will be some road back – even if he has come back from a 1 round defeat in the past.
Brook, who won the title that had been unfairly stripped from Mcintyre, with a 7th round stoppage of Barrie Jones back in June, looked fast, loaded with power and incredibly accurate as he jumped right on the former champion who never lost his belt in the ring. Basically, though he bravely beat the count and tried his best to continue, the fight was al over for the 30-year-old after the first knock down. Badly hurt and remaining so, Mcintyre was unable to take Brook’s follow up shots – crashing again twice more in quick time.
The third man in the ring gave Mcintyre every chance, but after the third knockdown he had more than seen enough. The vanquished Mcintyre was gracious in defeat, saying these things happen in boxing. He vowed to come back, but he faces a tough road.
For Brook, who is a huge fan of “The Prince,” a sensational future awaits. Not as cocky as Hamed, but looking last night as though he may have the necessary stuff to go as far as he did, this “Kid” is a welcome new champion of the welterweight division. Who knows, in a couple of years this hugely confident talent may be doing his stuff at world level. For now, he can enjoy defending
his 147 pound belt – he may not have too many serious challengers for it though!
In short, Brook’s next fight cannot come quickly enough.
