BALTIMORE, MD (November 20, 2008) Super middleweight contender Joey Gilbert wasted no time taking control of the action Thursday night, dropping William Johnson with his first punch. The Reno , NV resident would drop the rugged Mississippi veteran four times before a halt was called to the action at 1:18 of the second round. “I felt great right out of the box, he threw a combination and I decked him with a solid overhand right. He was game and aggressive but I was able to beat him to the punch on a consistent basis” said Gilbert..
Knocking down Johnson twice more in the first, Gilbert finished him with a crunching left hook to the body in the second. With the win, Gilbert moves to 17-1-1 (13KO’s), with his second straight knockout win in the last three weeks. On October 30th, he knocked out Dan Wallace, also in the second round, his first bout back coming off a thirteen month layoff.
Gilbert and Yerington’s Jesse Brinkley are scheduled for their long awaited showdown in early 2009, details of which will be announced shortly.
Said Gilbert, “I’ve been training diligently since September and these last two fights have been terrific for me. I’d like one more in the next couple of weeks before I begin camp for the Brinkley fight.”

Jorge “The Truth” Teron added to “Holiday Hits”

NEW YORK (November 20, 2008) – World-rated lightweight Jorge “The Truth” Teron has been added to the third annual “Holiday Hits” pro boxing show, promoted by Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions, December 4 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, New York
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera (10-0, 6 KOs), fighting out of Newburgh (NY), headlines for the first time in the 8-round main event against 35-fight veteran Earl “Chocolate Drop” Ladson.
Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), the reigning NABO title-holder, was supposed to fight November 21st on the cancelled “The Grande Event” card against Aldo “El Pato” Valtierra (24-10, 13 KOs). They will now fight in a 10-round Special Lightweight Attraction on “Holiday Hits.”
“Cedric Kushner felt bad that his show was cancelled and he worked hard to get as many fighters back in action as soon as possible,” Duffy said. “Thanks to the New York State Athletic Commission that allowed us to extend our show, we were able to add two made fights and two others fighters who were supposed to fight on Ced’s show. It wasn’t fair to these kids who worked so hard for weeks, especially with the holidays coming up, and we’re happy to say some of them will still be getting a payday. It’s going to be a long night but boxing fans are really going to enjoy it.”
Teron, fighting out of the Bronx, is trained by former Olympic gold medalist and world champion, Mark Breland. The Puerto Rican-American Teron is rated as high as No. 4 by the WBO, as well as No. 13 by the WBA and No. 19 by the WBC. Mexican warrior Valtierra is a former WBA Fedecentro and WBC FECARBOX Central American super featherweight title-holder.
“What happened was unfortunate but I’m happy Bob Duffy came through for us,” Teron said. “It just gave me two more weeks to prepare, no big deal, but now I’ll have to be careful how much I eat on Thanksgiving. I’m just happy to be fighting. Unlike most
Mexican fighters, Valtierra doesn’t really come forward. He’s more of a boxer. I may have to come forward more than I usually do, but we’ve been working on that and other things for this fight. He’s only been knocked out once in 34 pro fights. I’m ready for a long fight. I don’t look past any fight because every fight is the most important of my career. All I can do as a fighter is get ready to fight even though my next fight could be a real big one.”
IBF Continental Africa cruiserweight champion Jaffa “African Assassin” Ballogou (46-6-1, 40 KOs), fighting out of New York City by way of Togo, takes on former New York State cruiserweight title-holder Daniel Judah (22-3-3, 10 KOs) in the 12-round co-feature for the vacant IBF International light heavyweight title.

The United States Olympic Committee Removes USA Boxing From Probation
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States Olympic Committee has ended its probation of USA Boxing, effective immediately. The lifting of the probation is an indication of the steady, positive progress USA Boxing has made in recent years, with operating effectiveness improving in numerous areas.
“USA Boxing has made consistent progress in improving its organization,” commented Jim Scherr, USOC CEO. “We’re enthused about the future prospects for USA Boxing to continue to grow and succeed, and hope the ending of its probation will be another positive step in its comeback.”
“We’re delighted about the USOC’s recognition of the overall progress we’ve been able to make as an organization,” commented Jim Millman, USA Boxing’s CEO. “With a renewed focus on marketing and a positive spirit that is embracing our membership and staff, our future is incredibly bright.”

USA Boxing recently hired Patrick Borkowski to serve as its first High Performance Director and retained two top ranked athletes, two-time Olympian and 2007 World Champion Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio) and U.S. Olympic Team Trials super heavyweight champion Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.).
USA Boxing was placed on probation by the USOC in November, 2002 due to problems relating to the organization’s managerial capability, governance structure, and other considerations. The organization went through governance restructuring in 2006 to reflect a leadership and management re-organization consistent with the best practices of the USOC’s most successful National Governing Body relationships.
The ending of the Probation will allow USA Boxing to operate at the same level of stature and status as the other NGBs that are in good-standing with the USOC.
