News: Godfrey-Gutierrez Saturday; Gunn Stops Gross; Baltic Boxing Union news

NEW TOWN, North Dakota (November 21, 2008) – Sovereign Nations Boxing Council (SNBC) debuts tomorrow night (Saturday, November 22) when cruiserweights Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey and Eddie “The Iron Man” Gutierrez fight for the first SNBC title headlining a special card, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota..

SNBC links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNBC’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate boxing in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.

“What makes SNBC different from other native organizations is that it’s not based on race,” SNBC president Pat Packineau explained. “SNBC has been created to draw awareness that tribal casinos host numerous boxing events every year and our new organization unites tribes in the sport by having our own championship belt. Boxers of any race may capture the SNBC championship, as long as the title fight is contested on federally recognized land or have off-tribal sites approved in advance by the SNBC board of directors.

“The SNBC’s goal is to bring notoriety to Native American casino boxing events and recognize the athletes competing on Tribal Lands for SNBC championships. We’re excited to host the first SNBC title fight at 4 Bears Casino.”

Godfrey and Gutierrez, both Native Americans, square-off in tomorrow night’s 10-round main event for the SNBC cruiserweight title. Providence-native Godfrey (17-1, 10 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBC, is the reigning NABF cruiserweight champion, while Gutierrez (15-5-1, 6 KOs), fighting out of Oakland (CA), is a former Illinois State cruiserweight title-holder.

Bobby Gunn Gets Redemption; Stops Gross in 3 to Win WBC USNBC Cruiserweight Title!

Heading into last night’s highly publicized rematch of his March 2006 controversial no contest with Shelby Gross, Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn was poised to take his opponent out, leaving no question as to who the better fighter was. With a loud and energetic crowd behind him Gunn, now 20-3-1 (17 KO’s) silenced his critics by thoroughly dominating Gross. Gross was knocked down 3 times and referee Nico Perez stopped the fight following the third knockdown, awarding Gunn a 3rd round TKO. Gunn is satisfied with his title winning performance as well as the fact he got the redemption he desperately wanted for the last 2 ½ years.

“I’m completely satisfied with my victory and glad I no longer have to think about the first fight”, said Gunn, the new WBC USNBC Cruiserweight champion. “Shelby is as strong as a bull and a fighter I couldn’t underestimate. “I had great training camp, top sparring, and my hard work paid off in the end” said Gunn, who also holds IBC International Cruiserweight belt.

Looking into the future, Gunn has his sights set on another world title. With his victory earning him a version of a WBC Cruiserweight crown, Gunn naturally has his eye on champion Giacobbe Fragomeni. Gunn feels Fragomeni is a great match up for him.

“I would love to fight him”, Gunn said of Fragomeni. “Styles make fights and a bout between us would be interesting. We match up very even physically and I would have no issue with going to Italy to challenge for his title” said The Celtic Warrior.

Baltic Boxing Union news – November 2008

Three fights for BBU titles in Poland:

In Poland there were three professional boxing shows during October and November in which the main event was each time for vacant Baltic Boxing Union´s titles. The shows which were promoted by Tomasz Babilonski and his Tom Boxing Team were arranged in Rembertow, Wieliczka and Stalowa Wola.
In Rembertow show Mariusz Cendrowski got the honour to be the first ever BBU International champion. Cendrowski won durable late sub Latvian Denis Alekseevs by fifth round TKO.

Most publicity was given to the show which was arranged 180 meters underground in Wieliczka around unbelievable frames. That show was widely broadcasted and it was noticed by Guinness World Records –organization as well as twice in worldwide recognized fightnews.com –webpage. In the show itself former WBO lightweight contender Matt Zegan 38 (21 KO) – 4 – 0 beat countryman Dariusz Snarski after eight close rounds by points.

Only a couple of days after Wieliczka show there was a fight for vacant BBU light heavyweight title between Polish Gregory Soszynski and German Steve Kroeker. Despite of Kroeker was the first German boxer to fight for BBU titles, he couldn´t capitalize his possibilities but Soszynski took the championship belt with stylish and secure point victory.
