From the office of WBC President Jose Sulaiman: World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman announced today that WBC heavyweight world champion Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine and official challenger Juan Carlos Gomez of Cuba/Germany have reached an agreement and signed for their mandatory fight. The purse offer, which was scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled. Shelly Finkel, representing Klitschko, and Ahmet Oner, representing Gomez, told President Sulaiman about the agreement..
They also said that the fight will be held in Germany during the first two weeks of March, 2009. It will be Klitschko’s first defense of the title that he won last October with a ninth-round TKO against defending champion Samuel Peter of Nigeria.
Klitschko has a record of 36-2 with 35 knockouts. His knockout percentage of 97.2 is the highest for a heavyweight world champion in the history of professional boxing.
Gomez has a record of 44-1 with 35 knockouts. A former WBC cruiserweight world champion, he won the title in February, 1998, and made 10 successful defenses before vacating the title to move up in weight. He became the mandatory heavyweight challenger with two wins, both by unanimous decision, in elimination bouts – the first against Oliver McCall and the second against Vladimir Virchis.
New Opponent for Carina Moreno
Four-time world champion, Carina “La Reina” Moreno (20-1, 6 KO’s), has a new opponent for her scheduled February 5, 2009 date at the Tachi Palace Casino in Lemoore Ca. Originally, Two-time world champion Wendy Rodriguez was slated to face Moreno, but had to pull out due to an injury. The Watsonville native will now face Sharon Gaines (11-11-1, 3 KO’s) in an eight round non-title bout at a catch weigh of 110 lbs.
“It’s disappointing that I wont be able to fight Wendy Rodriguez,” said Moreno, “I was really looking forward to that bout. She’s the only person that’s put a blemish on my record and I wanted to avenge that loss. That’s the way things go sometimes in boxing. I’ll now shift all my focus on Gaines and what she brings to the ring.”
Moreno will look to extend on her twelve fight winning streak when she faces Gaines on fight night. Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with the Tachi Palace Casino bring you the action. NO SUSPENSION!!!!!! HECTOR CAMCHO JR. HEADLINES FIGHT CARD JANUARY 17TH, 2009
New York-Friday, January 9, 2009- Contrary to recent published reports of a fight suspension against Puerto Rican Middleweight sensation Hector Camacho, Jr., 47-3, 27KO?s, Camacho is set to face off against Columbia TN, Sammy “Silk” Sparkman 20-17, 9KO?s, in a 10 round middleweight clash, Saturday January 17th at the famed Rock Arena, 5515 US 192 (near old town), in Kissimmee, Florida, promoted by Sal Musumeci?s Final Forum Boxing.
Camacho, Jr., was recently embroiled in a controversial situation where it was alleged he backed out of a scheduled match up against Yory Boy Campos, in Tijuana. Mexico, after allegedly signing the fight agreement.
Camacho?s camp vehemently denies any underhanded involvement and contends that he did not agree to or sign any legal binding papers agreeing to the match up. Also a point of strong contention is the signature on the fight documents is not that of Hector Camacho, Jr, but is in fact a forgery.
Lawyers representing Camacho have been in contact with the fight promoters asking for copies of the documents in question in an attempt to resolve this situation and clear Camacho?s name, they have yet to hear back from them. Camacho is looking forward to putting this to rest and get back to fighting his way into title contention.
“It?s a pity that a fighter with the undeniable talent that Hector Camacho, Jr., possesses, is marred by a situation he had nothing to do with, I as well as the fight fans look forward to witnessing the resurrection of a great fighter, starting with his fight on January 17th, he has been the consummate professional during this promotion; it has been my immense pleasure to work with him”- Sal Musumeci-Final Forum Boxing.
