REIGHT TRAIN BACK ON TRACK WITH 30TH WIN
Houston – Travis “Freight Train” Walker obtained his 30th win on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Michigan by scoring a first round knockout over Marvin Hunt. Since his exciting fight with Chris Arreola for the IBF mandatory eliminator, a fight in which he had Arreola down and hurt before getting careless when trying to finish Arreola off, Travis Walker has come back and fought 1-2 “stay busy” fights knocking out Marvin Ray Jones on February 28, 2009 in Arkansas and coming back just a month later and knocking out Marvin Hunt on March 28, 2009 in the first round. With the win over Hunt, Walker becomes one of only four heavyweight prospects under the age of 30 who have accumulated 30 wins or more in the heavyweight division.
The other heavyweight prospects under 30 who have 30 wins are Sam Peters, 28 years old, 30 wins, 3 losses; Eddy Chambers, 27 years old, 34 wins, 1 loss; and Malik Scott, 28 years old, 32 wins, no losses. Thus Travis Walker enters an elite of young heavyweight prospects with 30 wins. Walker stated, “I felt like I had the Chris Arreola fight won when I got careless. I repeatedly hurt him in the first round and dropped him in the second. I stung him again with a left hook and he was buzzed pretty good when my mouthpiece fell out and I asked the ref to call time.
This was a big mistake on my part because it caused a 22-second break and Arreola had a chance to clear his head and I got careless when I went in to finish him and got clocked as the break gave Arreola a chance to regroup. This was a mistake because of inexperience. My mouthpiece was ill-fitting and fell out. If you look at the tape there is no punch that knocked it out and in fact at the time it was coming out I was landing a good left hook. I should have known that when I had my opponent in trouble I should have kept punching and not worry about my mouthpiece. To his credit, Chris Arreola regrouped and came out firing so I don’t take anything away from his win, but rather I take away from the fight a good learning experience which I won’t commit again.
After watching the tape I also realized that if I just continued to do in the 2nd and 3rd round what I had done in the 1st round that being cautiously work behind my jab there might have been a different outcome. I easily won the first round without getting hit with any significant shots because I was cautious. I started doing this in the beginning of the 2nd round and I easily put him down without taking much abuse in return. However, once he was down I got a little wild and careless but still was landing; however, when the mouthpiece came out I made a big mistake. Now that I have had two fights back I am ready to step up again. I am hoping that Chris Arreola wins the heavyweight championship and gives me a rematch for the title. I think most fans would agree that there was more action in two rounds of our fight than in all the rounds put together of the major heavyweight fights since.
I have great respect for Chris Arreola and I am going to be rooting for him. I just hope he wants to do it again sometime. In the meantime I plan to continue to stay busy and move back up in the rankings.”
Stephen Munisteri, Travis Walker’s manager noted, “Travis with 30 wins only has 2 losses. The first was very controversial and he easily revenged his first loss with a rematch. The only fighter that he has lost to that he hasn’t beaten is Chris Arreola and he certainly would like to get another chance to fight that fight again. Travis does great in rematches. He lost three times to Jason Estrada in the amateurs, including the Olympic trials but came back to beat him in the pros. Likewise, he lost to George Garcia in the amateurs but came back to beat him in the pros. He got robbed with a quick stoppage in the first TJ Wilson fight and came back and dramatically knocked him out in the rematch.
Travis would love to get the same chance with Chris Arreola but as a manager I am realistic enough to know that Chris is now moving on to bigger fights but hopefully Travis will get an opportunity sometime in the future. With the Arreola fight being an exciting one and his only unavenged loss, I feel confident Travis will get another shot at the top and this time he will be ready. In the meantime, we plan just to stay busy, keep the Freight Train back on track, and look for a top 10 opponent who will give us an opportunity to knock him out.”
