UK Boxing: Brook and Mitchell added to Khan-Kotelnik; Maccarinelli will quit if he fails Lebedev test

Two more fighters have been added to the undercard of Amir Khan’s world title bout with Andreas Kotelnik on 18 July at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Speaking to the Steve Bunce Boxing Hour on Setanta Sports News Frank Warren revealed that Kell Brook and Kevin Mitchell had joined the line up. He said: “Kell Brook will defend his title on the card. Kell’s a tremendous young fighter. And also Kevin Mitchell will fight on the card, who’s a tremendous young fighter..

“If he comes through it he’ll be fighting for a world title in September against [Roman] Martinez.”

Kell Brook looks set to defend his British welterweight title against Michael Lomax.

Maccarinelli will quit if he fails Lebedev test

Enzo Maccarinelli will walk away from boxing if he fails to beat Denis Lebedev, who he fights in a WBO eliminator bout on 18 July.

In an interview on the Steve Bunce Boxing Hour on Setanta Sports News, Maccarinelli said he hoped to get his career back on track following his shock defeat to Ola Afolabi in March.

He said: “I was so devastated by the way I performed last time out ; it just hit me for six.

“I was offered a nice, easy warm up to get me back in the swing of things. Or they offered me this undefeated Russian [Lebedev]. Basically I said ‘give me the Russian’.”

Now based in Bolton with new trainer Karl Ince, Maccarinelli has his sights set on a rematch with Afolabi – if he can overpower Lebedev.

He added: “All I want is Ola. That’s the only fight I want. I spoke to Frank [Warren] and this is a way to get me one step closer to Ola, quickly.

“If the fight can be made Frank’s the man to make it. Until I fight Ola again my boxing career isn’t going to move on. With Ola I fought well below my best.

“That’s the fight that I want, but first I’ve got to get past Denis Lebedev.”
