by James Slater – We’ve already heard about the possibility of heavyweights Chris Arreola and Oleg Maskaev getting it on in the fall, but according to ESPN.com, this fight may actually be one part of an exciting-looking doubleheader that will also feature Paul Williams going up against Ukrainian danger-man Sergei Dzindziruk. According to ESPN, the doubleheader is being worked on now by promoter Dan Goossen, with the target date being October 3rd. The action would most likely take place in southern California and HBO would televise the bill. Let’s hope this card actually happens.
While the Arreola-Maskaev clash – which, interestingly and according to ESPN, would likely be an elimination bout with the winner being Vitali Klistchko’s mandatory challenger – is a pretty good match-up, Williams-Dzindziruk is a real attraction. In the past, some fans have even accused “The Punisher” (himself a fighter having a tough time landing the fights he really wants) of avoiding the 33-year-old southpaw known as “Razor..”
If the card does indeed go ahead, it will give the man who has proven he can fight at the highest level at welterweight, light-middleweight and middleweight a chance to shut up more of his critics. The 27-year-old who is also a lefty last fought in April of this year, when he all but shut-out Winky Wright over 12-rounds up at 160. A clash between he and the reigning WBO light-middleweight champion, at 154-pounds, would be a most interesting duel.
At 6.0,” Dzindziruk is only an inch shorter than Williams, and with his fine and unbeaten record of 36-0(22) the older man certainly has the credentials needed to stand up to the 37-1(27) American and sell himself to those fans who have not yet seen him in action. Going even further, this could possibly be the toughest fight of Williams’ career to date.
Going up and down in weight may not be the best of things for even a young fighter, but Williams has little choice as long as the fighters he wants to rumble with continue to avoid him. Dzindziruk has reportedly called out Williams in the past, and the October 3rd fight, if it goes ahead, could be billed as a battle between two of the most feared fighters in the sport. Both men are hungry, both men are highly skilled and both men can punch. What’s not to like?
With the always entertaining heavyweight contender Arreola opening the show against the still hard-hitting Maskaev, and Williams-Dzindziruk topping the bill, a good night of action can be expected in October. IF the card is made.
