HOUSTON – Lou Savarese, local resident and former heavyweight boxing champion, presents the inaugural boxing event by Savarese Promotions. The event, Thursday Night Throw Down, will be held on Thursday, August 6 at the Hilton American Houston at 7:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the night’s event will benefit Casa El Buen Samaritano, a local charity that has established a clinic in Southwest Houston to meet the basic medical needs of the underserved and underprivileged in the community..
Savarese officially retired from his boxing career in June 2007 after fighting 10 rounds with Evander Holyfield. Since his retirement, Lou has found another way to support his love of boxing. As a business man, Savarese has developed a company, Savarese Promotions, which produces high quality boxing events, in addition to helping fighters learn the business behind boxing; contracts, cash flow, scheduling, etc.
“Boxers who are involved in every aspect of their careers have a much higher success rate, and are better able to transition out of the sport, when the time comes,” says Savarese.
The fight lineup for August 6th includes local fighters, Chase “White Tiger” Shields vs. Cliff “Shotgun” English, as well as heavy weight rematch Eugene “Mean Gene” Hill vs. Zack “Attack” Page. Other fights include: Terrance Woods vs. Anthony Greeley; Gerardo “Tin Tin” Ibarra vs. Jerron Lockette; Chris “Hollywood” Hernandez vs. Mike Wagendlast; Steve “Freight Train” Collins vs. Brad “The Vanilla Gorilla” Bowers; Lanardo Tyner vs. Davey Armstrong; and Tiffany Junot vs. Kimberly Ann Connor.

The Main Event presents undefeated Native American Boxing Council Super Middleweight Champion George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah (19-0-1, 18 KOs). The Co-main Event features undefeated Oklahoma Lightweight Champion Noah Zuhdi (7-0, 7 KOs), named in 2009 as The Oklahoman’s boxing prospect of the year and featured in international boxing magazine Ringside.
World Rated Top Ten and WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight Champion Carson Jones (22-7, 14KOs) will be making his third appearance at Remington Park. Carson recently returned from sparring Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr. (39-0) and reports are he got the best of Chavez every sparring session.
Heavyweights of immense proportions will also be fighting. Former OKC Blazer, 290 pound heavyweight Ron “the Ice Man” Aubrey (5-2, 5 KOs) of OKC and Ty Cobb (5-1, 5 KOs) of Wichita Falls, Texas are on the fight card. Ice Man Aubrey was the ice hockey enforcer who fought over 600 fights on the ice and will be fighting a rematch with 271 pound John Fish (0-2) of Guymon, Ok.
Light Heavyweight Manuel “the Chicano Dream” Esparza (20-9-1, 5 KOs) is also scheduled on the card. Esparza recently fought former No. 1 middleweight contender Edison Miranda (32-4), and Esparza has fought former World Champion Hector “Macho” Camacho (79-5). Rugged Jonathan Nelson (16-20, 16 KOs), always in a slugfest, is looking forward to fighting back in OKC fighting rough Terrence Harris (0-3). Harris has a draw with super tough Kyle Sherman (10-2, 6 KOs) and promises an upset.
Immediately after the presentation of colors by the University of Oklahoma Color Guard, Oklahoma’s own Darla Z will sing the National Anthem accompanied by violinist Gena Alexander. Darla Z has opened in concert for country legend Willie Nelson, performed to sold out crowds at Sam’s Town Casino in Las Vegas and recently appeared in concert with Wayne Newton.
