IBF#13, WBC#19 middleweight contender Billy Lyell (20-7 4kos) made short work of late sub Chris Overbey (9-12) Friday night at the Appalacian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia. From the onset, Lyell pressed the action later dropping Overbey with a left hook at the end of the first stanza. Following another knockdown midway through the second, referee Steve Allred called a halt to the bout at 1:59 of round two. It marked Lyell’s fourth win in his last five fights including a recent upset of previously unbeaten contender John Duddy (26-1)..
In other action, local welterweight prospect Joey Myers (13-1-1) won a six round unanimous decision over durable vet Dezi Ford (24-26). Scores were 60-54 on two cards and 60-53. Also, local heavy Jason Pettaway (3-0) won a 6 round majority decision over Julius Jackson (3-4). Scores were 60-54 and 58-56 for Pettaway and 57-57. The pro-am card was promoted by Simons’ Promotions.
Cestus Fighter, “Da Bomb” George “Crushes” Gonzalez in Four on ESPN Under card!
On July 31, 2009, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida was the site for ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” boxing series that was headlined by Julio “The Kidd” Diaz taking on the impressive looking young prospect Victor Cayo. The event was promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing and proved to be another great night of super boxing action. The under card was loaded with enlivened young boxers that could very well be the future of the sport. Among those young charges was Cestus Management’s Super-Middleweight Don “Da’Bomb” George (17-0-1 w/15 kos) taking on rough Puerto Rican Emmanuel Gonzalez in a six round bout.
Things quickly heated up in the first round as “Da’Bomb” (167 pounds) came out sticking a powerful jab followed by a booming overhand right to the head of Gonzalez (166.25) which did not allow the Puerto Rican to find any kind of range or rhythm. The second and third rounds had some very rough and exciting toe to toe exchanges which saw Gonzalez attempt to up his aggression but was met head on by George who was throwing some hardcore leather in the form of jabs and overhand rights, followed by left hooks to the head that where clearly rattling Gonzalez by the end of the third round. The first thirty seconds of round four was red hot as George was connecting with hard shots to the head and body which where backing Gonzalez up and making him grimace. The end of the fight was sudden with George connecting with a bone crunching right hand to the solar plexus that stopped Gonzales in his tracks. The body shot dropped Gonzalez to his knees where the referee started the count; Gonzalez tried to get up but fell back down and was on all fours, causing the referee to stop the contest at fifty three seconds of round four. The fans erupted when “Da’Bomb” did his trademark celebratory back flip.

Karpency makes first defense!
WBA Fedecentro light heavyweight champ, Tommy Karpency (17-1-1 11kos) of Adah, Pennsylvania returns to the ring on Friday August 21st at the Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown, West Virginia. The 23 year old Karpency will defend his WBA Fedecentro belt over 10 rounds against undefeated challenger Chuck Mussachio (13-0-2 5kos) of New Jersey. Promoted by Simons’ Promotions and beginning at 8pm, the six bout card will also feature middleweight prospect Jimmy Lubash (13-2 6kos) in a six rounder.
