Every fight, every punch, every week since 1909 – This September, Boxing News reaches its 100th year anniversary. Since launching in 1909 and after publishing over 5,000 issues, it’s easy to understand why Boxing News is the most respected, loved and at times controversial combat magazine in the market. To celebrate 100 years in print, the 11th Sept issue will carry a special anniversary supplement that includes the 100 most extraordinary moments in Boxing plus the BN team’s choices for a range of Top 10s from knockouts to outrageous moments to promoters and biggest flops..
BN will also launch a bookazine which will feature a comprehensive guide to the top boxers, fights and defining moments over the last century of boxing. This will hit the newsstands in November.
Having worked on the Boxing News for the last 22 years, Editor Claude Abrams has been a key influence in guiding the magazine’s development, taking it from broadsheet format to today’s 48-page weekly magazine. Through this, Boxing News has achieved strong circulation growth for a number of years and also been able to publish a number of spin-off magazines, more recently with the launch of Fighting Fit. Speaking about the magazine achieving it’s 100th year anniversary, Claude said, “It’s a testament to the quality and strength of the publication as well as its committed readership to reach such an impressive milestone. Times have altered dramatically since the first issue was published, but the magazine continues to retain the core values that made it such an overwhelming success a century ago and that’s been a secret to its longevity.”
Boxing News is read by fans and the industry and has been a key influence in the careers of many fighters and promoters.
Former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan is just one of the magazine’s many devotees.
“It’s always been the Bible to me since the age of 12,” the “Clones Cyclone” said. “Back then Graham Houston was the Editor but I’ve lived through Harry Mullan and how Claude.
“It’s simply the best boxing magazine in the world. It’s as good as ever, if not better.”
Even promoters, who take their fair share of criticism from Boxing News, respect its place in the fistic world.
“Boxing News is the Bible of the trade,” said Frank Maloney. “It was there long before the internet sites and it’ll be there long after those sites have crashed. The weekends wouldn’t be the same without it.”
