by James Slater – Unbeaten 25-year-old Londoner Derek “Del Boy” Chisora is another in the large number of people who feels “Big Bad” John McDermott was robbed this past Friday night in his fight with the heavily hyped Tyson Fury. Chisora, 10-0(5) says McDermott definitely deserves a rematch with Fury, but that he hopes he doesn’t get one because he’d love to be the first man to beat the 6’8″ traveller..
Speaking on his promoter Frank Warren’s web site, Chisora has predicted how he will KO both Fury and McDermott if he ever gets the opportunity.
“If they [Fury and McDermott] fight me they will find out they have bitten off more than they can chew,” Chisora said. “It was a good scrap on Friday, and there’s no doubt McDermott deserved to win. I wish I could have the same thing that the referee was smoking because it looked like good stuff. All the talk at the moment is of a rematch, but I hope they don’t do it because I want to be the first to take Fury’s unbeaten record.
“If he goes in with McDermott again he’ll get beaten. I’ll knock out McDermott no problem, but it won’t be the same as bursting Fury’s bubble.”
More than level with Fury when it comes to the boasting, Chisora will perhaps find he has trouble getting the majority of fans to accept his boasts. Yet to face anyone as experienced as the underrated McDermott, Chisora has never faced anyone as big, young and hungry as Fury either. The way Fury was made to labour against McDermott, and due to the manner of his highly controversial win, it was almost inevitable that a number of British rivals would come out and issue challenges to the 21-year-old. But was Chisora as keen to fight Fury a few months back? Not according to Team-Fury, who claim they offered Chisora a winner-take-all deal, only to have it turned down flat.
Styles make fights, and a still learning Fury always was going to have his hands full against 29-year-old McDermott at this stage, as he will once again if the return comes off within the next six months or so. But styles make fights, and Fury, in my opinion anyway, would have a good chance of derailing Chisora. As to Chisora-McDermott; unless he were to get robbed once again, “Big Bad” John would school “Del Boy” on the way to a points win the way we all saw him teach Fury a lesson on the way to getting a bad decision.
One thing’s for sure, the British heavyweight scene is looking a lot more exciting now than it was this time last year.
