By Samuel Rivera: As promised I will eat my crow, as I predicted a unanimous decision win for Marquez. I thought the skillful Marquez would counter the Mayweather effectively enough to gain his respect, but I was wrong.
Mayweather now 40-0 proved that he is PFP the best in the world today, by beating Marquez over twelve rounds. Marquez came into the fight with the better credentials having fought top notch fighters over the last few years, while Mayweather came in to the fight from a two year layoff and a questionable selection of opponents at welter.
It turns out none of that would matter as Mayweather would go on to beat Marquez decisively, and in my eyes at least remove Pacquiao out of the equation. If what happened last night is an indication of things to come, it doesn’t look good for the Filipino Icon when he enters the ring on November 14, to face Welterweight Champ Miguel Cotto..
Speed was of essence in Mayweather’s shut out win, but size might have been the most significant asset in Floyd’s arsenal. Quite simply Mayweather’s jab was rocking Marquez like it was a power punch; Marquez even tasted the canvas from a short left hook in round.
It was a testament to Marquez’s toughness that he survived the entire twelve rounds while still trying to the very end to knock Mayweather out. But he never got close to doing so, even when his punches landed squarely (and there weren’t many of those) they seemed to lack stem and Marquez never got any leverage on them as Mayweather would usually roll with the punch or move in way that the impact of the punch was mostly negated.
Perhaps most telling of all was that Marquez couldn’t move Floyd at all with his punches and was never able to get himself in a position to counter Floyd with his vaunted uppercuts, as Floyd was pretty much hurting and knocking Marquez off balance even with his jabs.
Marquez dared to be great by calling out a bigger, younger and faster guy, but Floyd beat Marquez easier than I had envision he could, and for that I give him props, I never thought I would see the day when Marquez would be outclassed in the way he was.
Mayweather was that good.
Perhaps the most exciting moment in the fight happened after the actual fight ended and Shane Mosley publicly challenged Floyd as Kellerman interviewed him. Shane Mosley demanded Floyd to answer his challenge and Floyd in a rare gesture, tried to take the mike away from Kellerman (perhaps blaming Max for the awkward moment) before leaving the ring after Kellerman called a halt to the post fight interview.
It is unlikely Floyd takes on Mosley next, look for him to fight the Cotto-Pacquiao winner.
