05.10.09 – By Trish Kilcullen – On the undercard of the “Saturday Afternoon Special” card, sponsored by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc., this past Saturday, fans in attendance at the beautiful Twin River Event Center, in Lincoln, Rhode Island, were treated to a plethora of up and coming welterweight and middleweight bouts, to whet their whistle for the main events:
Dunwell Sheds Dreads and Shears Marquez in Three!
Scheduled for six rounds at light welterweight, Peabody, MA’s Simeon Dunwell took care of David Marquez, of Fort Worth, TX, in three rounds, by dominating power that kept Marquez on the defense.
Dunwell, known for his dreadlocked fights at The Roxy, in Boston, MA, is also known for his tenacious and energetic style, as evidenced by a prior record of only one loss against nine wins.
Marquez was never in the fight, as Dunwell was in full control, with body shots gained a standing count by referee, Joey Lupino, which gave Marquez less than ten seconds to recover in the first round.
In round two, Dunwell recovered well, and was competitive, trading punches, but Dunwell gained momentum once again, and landed a strong hook to the head.
In the third stanza, Marquez started to counterpunch effective, until Dunwell gained momentum once again, and came forward with strong hooks, that saw Marquez react with desperate grabs. Referee, Joey Lupino said to Marquez “Start fighting, or I’ll stop this fight!” And so he said, and so he did, waving off the fight, at round 1:40 of round four.
With the win, Simeon Dunwell notches his tenth win against only one loss, with 2 KO’s to his record. David Marquez goes back to the drawing board, with a record that settled at 5-7-1, 1 KO.
CARO EXORCISED BUTLER!
Damien Butler entered the square ring, to theme song of “The Omen,” to fight Jesus Caro, in a light welterweight bout scheduled for six rounds. But after the musical religious hoopla, when the first bell tolled, a spirited Jesus Caro went right to work, just like he does at Manfredo’s Gym, where he trains like a mad man.
“Jab and circle,” barked trainer Peter Manfredo, Sr. Caro obliged, and racked up his score. Caro, the shorter man, balanced his game plan, by trying to stay inside against his taller opponent, and ate chunks of leather from his foe; the sacrifice of the round square.
In round two, Caro’s corner yelled, “work behind the jab,” and the coachable Caro responded, yet Butler effectively landed some counter punches that caught the judges’ attention. But, by the end of round two, Caro seemed back in control.
In the third round, Butler connected again with good counterpunches. Manfredo yelled, “don’t stand in front of him – – walk around him,” and Caro responded.
In the fourth and final round, Caro took command, and punched his opposition backward, until Butler found himself with his back to the ropes. Caro then connected with a devastating left hook to the noggin, that landed his nemesis on the canvas, leaning against the ropes, with feet aimed skyward. A determined Butler rose again, only to be christened again with close body shots, until the final bell rang.
In the end, the judges gave the nod to Jesus Caro, 40-35, and 39-36 twice.
With the win, the promising Jesus Caro remains undefeated, elevating his record to 5-0, 4 KO’s, while Damien Butler became Caro’s first opponent who had not been knocked out, but suffered his second defeat against no wins.
BAUZA BEATS ROWELL
At 25 seconds of the second round, Hartford, CT’s David Bauza, wins a TKO decision, when he knocked down his last minute opponent, Johnn Rowell, of Atlanta, GA, in their junior middleweight bout, which had been scheduled for four rounds. Bauza had no real opposition, as Rowell was just outclassed this afternoon.
With the win, David Bauza notches his second professional win against no losses; both wins being by way of knock out. John Rowell, suffered his third professional loss to no wins.
BOISSE BESTS LAWTON IN 4
Providence, RI’s Vladine Biosse faced off with the Big Apple’s Tafari Lawton, in a special attraction four round bout at super middleweight.
This was another competitive bout between relatively even matched middleweights, which resulted in a win by decision, 40-36, and 39-38 twice.
Biosse betters his record to an undefeated 3-0, 2 KO’s, while Lawton’s record is an even 1-0, O KO’s.
