HARTFORD, Conn., (Nov. 4, 2009) – Title Night in Hartford just got that much better with the announcement that Saturday night’s HBO televised co-feature between “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey and Alfredo “Perro” Angulo has been approved for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) interim junior middleweight world title. “It’s been 20 years since Hartford has hosted a world championship fight and now it will be hosting two on the same night,” said Gary Shaw, who is co-promoting the Yorgey-Angulo fight along with Banner Promotions. “It’s a testament to the quality of this matchup that the WBO is sanctioning Angulo vs. Yorgey for its interim world title. Fans attending and viewers watching on HBO are in for an exciting night of fistic fireworks..”
HBO will televise the fight as the co-featured bout on its World Championship Boxing series and it’s scheduled for 12 rounds.
Angulo (16-1, 13 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, is world-rated No. 4 by the WBO. He meets WBO No. 5 Yorgey (22-0-1, 10 KOs, of Bridgeport, Pa.), in a matchup that was originally for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental junior middleweight title. The spectacular co-feature will take place on HBO beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT, from the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. and will precede the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson rematch for the WBC interim and IBO light heavyweight title.
Remaining tickets, priced at $200, $100, $75, $50, and $35, (plus any applicable fees and surcharges), can be purchased at the XL Center box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, through Ticketmaster Charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000 and online at www.xlcenter.com.
MUNROE WARNED BY MALONEY
RENDALL MUNROE has been told he faces the toughest night of his professional career when he faces Simone Maludrottu (30-2).
The Leicester binman (19-1) will be making the fifth defence of his European super-bantamweight crown when he faces the tricky Italian mandatory challenger at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre on Friday November 20.
Promote Frank Maloney hopes the fight will be granted WBC eliminator status for the world crown worn by Japan’s Toshiaki Nishioka.
Maloney said: “Maludrottu is world class and Rendall needs to step up a gear and prove he can beat the world’s best.
“Maludrottu made six defences of the European bantamweight title before giving it up and then went close when he challenged for a world title in Japan.
“He beat one of my other fighters Ian Napa on points a couple of years ago. Anybody who knows boxing will tell you Ian only loses to very best.
“I know Mike and Jason Shinfield have got top sparring for Rendall and looking at tapes of Maludrottu.
“Nothing has been taken to chance and with purse bids securing home advantage I am confident Rendall will be all right on the night even though this is the toughest assignment of his career.”
Also on the star studded bill is Sunderland’s 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries who will be bidding for his fifth straight win on the bill.
Tickets for the star studded Nottingham show priced £85 and £35 are available from www.frankmaloney.com and 0871 226 1508.
Boxing: Gary Young, Willie Limond
Alex and Katherine Morrison are proud to promote the first ever live boxing show at the Glasgow Pavilion Theatre on Sunday November 15.
The father and daughter promotional team promoted a beamback of Mike Tyson’s world heavyweight title defence against Frank Bruno at the venue in 1989 and are also running this event in association with the management at the Pavilion.
Gary Young is out to make up for lost time when he faces fellow Edinburgh native and former stablemate Gary McMillan for the vacant Scottish welterweight title in the main event
Young has not fought since breaking his right hand while securing a routine six-round win over David Kirk back in September 2007. Since then luck has been in short supply for the 26-year-old with the first quarter of 2008 spent recovering from the injury and then the promotion he was scheduled to fight on in June was cancelled.
A six month spell in America failed to produce the opportunities that Young was looking for and he decided to return home earlier this year.
Young said: “A lot of people do comment that I slipped off the boxing radar, and I fully agree, but a boxer with a broken hand doesn’t really need too much publicity. While I was inactive I didn’t feel the need to be in the paper or be seen at boxing shows. Now I have the chance to reclaim a place among the top domestic welterweights.
“I am training for this fight the way I would train for any title fight. The mere fact that Gary also comes from Gilmerton, the same area of Edinburgh as myself, and used to train in the same gym as me is irrelevant. I don’t care about getting personal – this is just a job to me.
“I am a highly confident and motivated professional who will step into the ring on November 15 with a first taste of championship level. I have a fantastic training team behind me in Paul Weir and Willie Quinn and I am punching harder, faster and boxing better than I have been in my whole career.”
Willie Limond will make his first appearance against an as yet unnamed opponent since capturing the WBU lightweight title via unanimous decision over Englishman Ryan Barrett in May. Now that the Glaswegian has vacated that belt he is hoping to become a champion again in 2010.
Limond said: “The aim is to pursue other titles next year and perhaps a shot at the British title. I just want to be kept busy. I have been a professional for ten years and only had two defeats in that time – and they were against Alex Arthur and Amir Khan who went on to become world champions – so I hope that something will happen soon
“At the moment I am just concentrating on preparing for this fight and I believe that with a capacity crowd there will be a brilliant atmosphere inside the Pavilion.”
Craig Windsor and Santino Caruana will also be in action after the duo recorded points victories on Morrison Promotions’ Thistle Hotel bill on Friday night. Coatbridge’s Windsor is now 4-0 with two wins inside the distance after defeating Paul Royston and Cambuslang man Caruana made it three wins in a row against Steve Gethin.
Tickets priced at £20, £30 and £40 are available from Morrison’s Gym on 0141 554 7777 and the Pavilion Theatre on 0141 332 1846. There is not a bad seat in the house.

(Tacoma, WA) Russia’s Elite Fighters invade the Emerald Queen
Casino, November 7th, 2009. Headlining the card is WBO’s #4 Ranked Andrey Isaev (21-1, 7 KO’s). He will fight Derrick Campos (20-6, 11 KO’s). “I am very excited about this fight. Both fighters are on winning streaks. It will be a great main event,” said Promoter Brian Halquist.
Also on the card are two of Russia’s up and coming prospects. Vyacheslav Gusev (16-2, 3 KO’s) and Alishir Rahimov (19-0, 11 KO’s).
“This is a great opportunity for both the Russian and U.S. fighters,” said Halquist. “Gusev and Rahimov have built their record in Russia and haven’t fought western fighters. This will be a true test for all of these fighters. Ultimately, the fight fans are going to witness world class fighters competing.”
Also on the card is a rematch between Tammie Johnson (4-2-2) and Sarah Pucek (3-0-1). When Sarah and Tammie fought last time, the crowed were on their feet and there were a lot of mixed opinions on who won. They want to fight five rounds this time, so there won’t be a draw or any doubt who wins,” Halquist commented.
