Alfredo Angulo – Back To His Vicious Best With KO Of Yorgey

by James Slater – Though he was fighting for the spurious interim version of the WBO light-middleweight title, Mexico’s Alfredo Angulo scored the most devastating KO during this past weekend of boxing, a weekend that was all but dominated by the WBA heavyweight title fight held in Germany.

“El Perro,” who iced a brave but outgunned Harry Joe Yorgey on the under-card of the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson rematch, put on a display that made one think he just might be back on his way to becoming the star many felt he would be before he was out-pointed by Kermit Cintron three fights ago. Once again showing the kind of G-force punching power he possesses, the 27-year-old laid out the previously unbeaten Yorgey in a frightening manner..

Now the holder of a belt, even if we all know who the real WBO 154-pound champion is, Angulo can once again look ahead to making his great fighting country proud. No, Yorgey, 22-0-1 (10) going in, is no world beater, but he is a good, honest fighter, he was undefeated and dangerous and he was coming in off an eye-catching stoppage win over Ronal Hearns. Some fans even felt the 31-year-old from Bridgeport, PA had a shot at victory going into the fight that ultimately saw Yorgey destroyed in less than three-rounds.

The question is, what now for Angulo? Now that he’s bounced back from his sole career loss with two stunning stoppage victories (Gabriel Rosado being taken out inside two-rounds back in August) a return with Cintron would be a good idea. A chance to wipe the slate clean, Angulo would almost certainly take a second fight with “The Killer.” Cintron, though, may want to fight back down at 147-pound from here on in; we’ll have to wait and see.

Other exciting possibilities for Angulo, now 17-1(14) would be match-ups against the real WBO light-middleweight champ, Sergiy Dzinziruk, IBF ruler Cory Spinks, the winner of the Daniel Santos-Yuri Foreman WBA 154-pound title fight or, on a later date, and once he’s returned to the ring, James Kirkland (I would also list WBC champ Sergio Martinez, but he is fighting Paul Williams next, up at 160). Either one of these fights would likely entertain, and what’s more, with his raw power Angulo would have a great chance against either guy.

Fans were disappointed when Angulo lost so comprehensively to Cintron back in May, but the young fighter has shown what he’s made of by getting back to winning ways so soon. What’s more, the 27-year-old warrior has probably rejuvenated any excitement that was lost on May 30th of this year in Hollywood, Florida.

Once again, Angulo is up there with the most thrilling fighters currently doing business in the sport. Let’s hope “Perro” remains as active as he has been recently.
