The Project: Kubrat Pulev, heavyweight

By Coach Tim Walker – Hello all. I’ve been getting so many fighter suggestions that it has prompted me to present another new segment to Eastside Boxing called the Project. Quite honestly some of the fighter suggestions that I have gotten fall a little short of the requirements set in place for Weekly Stud. Still, it is my goal to help promote the sport thus I have decided to touch on some of these newer pros as well.

Fighters highlighted in The Project are just that, Projects. Given that, I won’t evaluate them as thoroughly as Weekly Stud candidates because they aren’t as developed mostly. The Project is a face value look at new fighters in an effort to help promote the sport of boxing..

This week’s Project, heavyweight Kubrat Pulev (3-0-0 KOs 2)

Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev, a Sofia, Bulgaria native, is a 6’-4 ½” orthodox fighter who falls easily into the mold of the modern towering heavyweight. Though he has only 3 professional fights he lays claim to a significant win in his most recent ring battle by beating Nigerian born Gbenga “Bang Bang” Oloukun (17-2 at the time) who in August of this year beat former WBO heavyweight world champion Lamon Brewster by unanimous decision.

Pulev is a decorated amateur boxer with two handed power and a good chin. As an amateur he has faced highly touted boxers such as Cuban Odlanier Solis (15-0 heavyweight), Russian Alexander Alexeev (18-1 cruiserweight), Ukrainian Vyacheslav Glazkov (2-0 heavyweight) and Germany’s Sebastian Kober (19-0 heavyweight).

At 28 years of age he seems to be on a rapid pace to catch up to where some of his former amateur competition is in terms of professional experience and success. His pro competition has a combined record of 28-13-2 which is certainly not the pace or competition level of a fighter with intentions of warming up to the pro ranks. Pulev began his professional career in September and has fought in each successive month and is scheduled to fight again December 5 in Germany on the undercard of Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi.
