By Paul Strauss: This is one fight in which most boxing fans can willingly be cheering for both fighters. Regardless who wins, fans will undoubtedly be satisfied. They already look with respect at these two great fighters. They appreciate the class and distinction with which they conduct themselves.
There are lots of nice guys in the sport, but not so many that reach the level these two have reached. What’s great is they have still managed to maintain their humility and eagerness to please. There is no phoniness about these two. They really care what their fans think. They give everything they have to entertain not only their loyal following, but they also see themselves fulfilling what they truly believe is an obligation to all fans. It isn’t enough to just get the “W”. They sincerely want to perform at their highest level and give fans their money’s worth.
It has been that strength of character, along with their god given talent, that has not only given them title belts and championships, but has endeared them to all fans.. Certainly there are many athletes who make great sacrifices in hopes of attaining their goals. There’s the grueling, agonizingly long days they put in that all too often still finds them falling short because the basic gift of talent just isn’t there. Many times it’s the other way around. There’s talent but not the dedication, will and character to go along with the talent.
There’s a third group too. They are the incredibly talented and successful athletes who reach high levels of success, but are still a disappointment. Sadly, over time, it becomes evident they foolishly believe everything is about them and owed to them. They can never gain the kind of adulation given to fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.
Other fighters can and should take a lesson from these two in how they have conducted themselves leading up to Saturday’s mega fight. There has been none of the usual profanity, insults and false bravado. Both men repeatedly say it will be their toughest fight. They voice great respect for each other, and express a belief that this will be a great fight. Certainly they are confident and aren’t afraid to say so, but it is done in the correct way, not in anyway demeaning to their opponent.
I know you can’t wait to see Manny’s flashing speed and great power punching accuracy matched against Miguel’s strength, debilitating body punches and underrated jab. And, watch how Miguel will transition to southpaw in hopes of containing Manny. Can he? If Manny gets caught, can he stand up to Miguel’s power? Will cuts be a factor? The questions go on and on and remain a great source of conversation until within hours, all are answered. Just remember, we already know who the winner will be……..it’s both of these great fighters!
