After eleven successful title defences in nearly six years the Hungarian world champion Zsolt „Firebird“ Erdei (30-0, 17 KOs) seeks a new challenge at the peak of his career. Due to a fact that the unification bouts against the WBA and respectively IBF world champion Gabriel Campillo and Tavoris Cloud (he cancelled the fight last minute) were called of by the titleholders, the popular Zsolt Erdei will now display his world class skills in the next higher weight divison. His predecessor, WBO world champion Dariusz „Tiger“ Michalczewski, also took this path in 1994 when he was the light heavyweight champion and challenge the WBO cruiserweight champion Nestor Giovanni. He won that fight.

Universum chief Klaus-Peter Kohl: „Everyone who knows Zsolt Erdei can confirm that he seeks the ultimate challenge. As a long-time WBO light heavyweight world champion we had planned a unification bout against the WBA champion Gabriel Campillo. After his cancellation we were in completing talks with the IBF world champion Tavoris Cloud but than he surprisingly called it off. Now we are looking forward that Zsolt Erdei has stepped up a weight class like his predecessor Dariusz Michalczewski and that he will now challenge the world champion. It will be a special fight and we are thrilled to return to Kiel with such an event as it has been three years to find a suitable date in the Sparkassen-Arena to stage this fantastic night!“

Juergen Braehmer is the WBO World Champion

Jürgen Brähmer is now the full WBO light heavyweight world champion. Long-standing WBO 175lb world champion Zsolt Erdei has relinquished the belt to move up to cruiserweight to challenge WBC world champion Giaccobe Fragomeni on November 21st in Kiel, Germany. Brähmer is Universum Box-Promotion’s 33rd pro world champion.

Also, an opponent has been named for Brähmer’s first defense on December 19 in his hometown of Schwerin. The “Hundred Year Talent” will face unbeaten Russian Dmitry Sukhotsky (14-0, 9 KOs), the WBO-Europa titleholder and #10 in the WBO ratings.

“I am very glad that I’ve have finally reached my big goal to be a professional world champion,” stated Brähmer. “Of course, now I have to win on December 19th against Sukhotsky as an obligation to Zsolt. But with the title I am still far from the end. I would like to win convincingly in many good world championship fights and show that I deserve to carry this belt.“

Erdei commented, “I wish Jürgen a lot of fun and a lot of luck with the belt. He shouldn’t merely just lose it. Now I’m going to get the WBC belt of Mr. Fragomeni and become the first Hungarian boxer to win world titles in in two weight classes.“

Co-Promoter Dietmar Poszwa added, “After nearly six years as a WBO world champion, Zsolt Erdei very much wanted his next fight to be another big highlight in his career. We worked on two title unifications, but unfortunately in each case the negotiations failed shortly before the end. Then the possibility came up for us to box for the WBC belt at cruiserweight. We sat down to a table with all involved parties and put together this great fight for Zsolt. In boxing history, not too many boxers have succeeded in becoming world champion in two weight classes!“
