News: Edner Cherry; Huck vs Richards; Kaliesha West

TAMPA, FL (February 10, 2010) Former world title challenger Edner “CHERRY BOMB” Cherry is a man on a mission and continues on his path towards another world title opportunity on Friday, February 19th in the main event of “TRIPLE-HEADER IN TAMPA” at the Ala Carte Event Pavilion. Cherry squares off against Columbian banger Hevinson Herrera in the headline bout of an evening of world class professional boxing presented by TKO Boxing Promotions, Fight Night Productions and Ker’s WingHouse..

“I certainly feel like this is my year to become a world champion. Now that I’m fighting at junior lightweight I feel much stronger and very confident. Ideally, I’d like to fight a top five contender after this fight and then one of the belt holders at 130, but the important thing is to take care of business on the 19th” said the 27 year old native of Nassau, Bahamas.

The battle against Herrera will be Cherry’s first in Tampa since his sixth round knockout of Wes Ferguson in June of 2007. “Fighting in Tampa is great, I’m truly blessed to have the tremendous support of the fans here.”

The 27 year old Cherry returned to action on December 17th with a brutal third round stoppage of Jovann Jones at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. Using an array of thunderous body shots, the Wauchula, Florida resident dropped Jones three times on his way to the victory, improving his record to 25-6-2 (13KO’s).

In September 2008, Cherry lost a very hard fought twelve round decision to welterweight world champion Timothy Bradley.

Herrera, 14-4-1 (9KO’s), will be making his first start in the United States having previously battled numerous world class fighters in Panama, South Africa and France. He is on a three bout winning streak as he enters his initial bout of 2010.

K “WILD WILD” WEST GETS FIRST WORLD TITLE SHOT

WEST WILL TRAVEL TO DENMARK TO CHALLENGE ANITA CHRISTENSEN

At just 22 years of age, female bantamweight sensation K “Wild Wild” West will be fighting for her first world title; making it a dream come true for the young fighter out of Moreno Valley, California. West (11-1-1, 2 KO’s) will be making the long trip to Denmark to challenge four-time former world champion Anita Christensen (24-1-0 KO’s) for the vacant WBO world bantamweight title on March 25, 2010.

Since West was a little girl hanging around her father in the gym, in addition to having an outstanding amateur career and making her pro debut in early 2006, this is what she has been diligently training for; a shot at a world title. Coming off a draw against two-time world champion Ada Velez in January, West is eager to make the trip to Europe and claim her first world championship.

This will be a tough task for her as Anita Christensen is truly a remarkable fighter who West has followed and definitely respects. It has been a little over a year and a half since Christensen has been in the ring, however, that will not deter West from training hard. West will head to Denmark hoping to win over the fans and give them a good show. Her father, trainer and manager Juan West has kept Kaliesha humble and in great shape, ensuring she doesn’t take her opponent lightly.

Although this is West’s fourteenth professional fight, she is ranked fifth among world active bantamweights and first among active bantamweights in the United States, Canada and Mexico according to boxrec.com. During her career, West has fought the likes of Suzzanah Warner, Ava Knight, Rolanda Andrews and Ada Velez.

Catching up with Kay on her thoughts of her first world title fight, she noted that, “this fight will be just one of many chapters I plan to make in the sport of boxing. I’m ready for the opportunity to fight for the world title and GOD knows how bad I want that title!”

Her trainer and manager Juan West also noted that, “I remember heartbreak the day I lost my first top gun fighter and K told me to bank on her, I did and we’re on our way to fight for a world title. I can’t describe how proud I am of K and how ready she will be come March 25th.”

This ten-round world title bout is being brought to you by Danish promoter Andres Vester and will take place at the Arena Midt in Kjellerup, Denmark. Stay tuned for training camp notes leading up to the big night as K “Wild Wild” West prepares herself for the biggest fight of her life…
