By Paul Strauss: Devon Alexander treated the Mohegan Sun Casino fans in Uncasville, Conn to something special………a first time stoppage of Juan Urango. Knowledgeable fans expected Alexander to box well, but not everyone was certain that he could remain in charge over the course of a long pressure filled fight with one of the most feared punchers in the junior welterweight division.
Alexander started the fight making use of a very good sharp, crisp right jab. That punch, coupled with an occasional right uppercut and good movement easily kept in him charge for the first couple of rounds. By the third round, Urango seemed to increase the pressure a notch or two, and managed to land a few pretty good right hooks to the head, and several hard wide shots to the body.
In the next couple of rounds, it appeared Urango was managing to inch a bit closer to Alexander, and the threat of his power becoming more of a factor seemed likely.. But, every time he seemed to get an attack going, Alexander would counter, or move out of danger. He was boxing beautifully.
By the fifth, Urango seemed to get even more frightening with the muscled hard punching pressure. However, he has a bad habit of bending in when he comes forward ready to launch a punch, and Alexander repeatedly took advantage by use of the right uppercut. It was an hard punch, and obviously would get Urango’s attention, but no one anticipated the effect it would have a little later. Timing is everything. The main thing was Alexander remained calm and continued to box very well.
In the seventh round and the final eighth round, Urango stepped up the level of power on his shots, so much so that he was actually leaving his feet with his punches, especially the right hook. That proved to be his undoing in the eighth when he missed with a straight left, and then left his feet with what he most certainly hoped would be a huge right hook. It was at that same moment that Alexander fired his own right uppercut as a counter to Urango’s missed left. The right uppercut met Urango’s airborne body right on the chin, and down went Urango in a very bad way.
Urango managed to beat the count, but Alexander caught him with another glancing uppercut, and then a right hook to the temple. Urango went down again,, and this time it was apparent he was not going to recover. The referee looked closely at him and chose to waive things off. Urango was not in control of his faculties and the TKO was the proper call. The Iron Twin succumbed to Alexander the Great.
