By By GM Ross: Sebastien “Double Trouble” Demers earned a majority decision victory over former WBA middleweight champion William Joppy this evening in a ten round, super middleweight contest at the Montreal Casino. Judges Dale Suddaby and Jack Woodburn both scored the fight 97-93 in favour of Demers, while Claude Paquette perceived a closer contest, scoring the fight a 95-95 draw. With the win over Joppy, Demers improves to a perfect 6-0-0 since his loss to Dinoisio Miranda back in August of 2008. For the aging Joppy, now thirty-nine years of age, the loss is his fourth in nine fights.
In an eight round contest, Nicholson Poulard successfully bounced back from his recent defeat at the hands of Sebastien Demers, earning a unanimous decision victory over veteran Manitoban Larry Sharpe.. As in the first round of his contest with Demers, Poulard was able to drop his opponent early, sending Sharpe sprawling to the canvas with a beautiful straight right hand. Pasquale Procopio and Jean Gauthier scored the bout 79-72, while Robert Gray had it 78-73, giving Poulard the unanimous decision.
Logan McGuinness improved his chances of earning a shot at the vacant Canadian Boxing Federation lightweight crown by defeating the far more experienced Pedro Navarrete of Mexico via an eight round unanimous decision. With the win McGuinness moves to 10-0-0.
In a showdown of heavy handed welterweights, Kevin Bizier of Saint-Emile, Quebec, scored a first round knockout over Noel Cortez of Mexico in their scheduled eight round contest. The end came after Bizier unleashed two left hooks – the first to the head, followed by a second to the body – the latter of which put Cortez to the Canvas for the count. In other welterweight action Samuel Vargas of Ontario moved to 2-0-0, handing Pascal Leonard of Saint-Jerome, Quebec, the second loss of his short, four fight career, via a six round unanimous decision.
