Now, instead of meeting the 2000 Olympic gold medallist in London next month, the 31-year-old who is 45-2-1(27) will travel to Germany to face “Dr Iron Fist” on May 29th.
This news has come as a big surprise to a lot of people, Sosnowski included. And the Polish warrior who lives in the U.K has referred to the fight as a “dream come true.”
“Because of the [scheduled] Audley Harrison fight I am already in training and suddenly comes this once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight Klitschko,” Sosnowski is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. “For me, Klitschko is already over the hill. Klitschko will regret that he picked me. I will be [come] the first Polish heavyweight champion of the world..”
It will be interesting to see how the fans will take to the news announcing this fight. Vitali has already said he plans to make 2010 his final year in the ring; therefore should he not make the most of the time he has left by taking the biggest fights possible? Facing Sosnsowki may not have been Klitschko’s first choice, however, (after all, he was trying hard to get a fight signed with Nikolai Valuev) and looking to keep active in his final 12 months in the sport makes sense for the soon-to-be 39-year-old – because, as we know, he wants to sign off with a clash with David Haye. For that fight, if it does come off, Vitali will need to be a sharp as he can be.
So, instead of remaining idle as he waits for the WBA champion, Vitali will face Sosnowski. The Pole is a decent fighter at the very least, and he is a hard worker who is always in great physical condition when he enters the ring. Probably best known for his upset 8th-round TKO win over Danny Williams back in 2008, Sosnowski has also beaten a faded Orlin Norris (W MD 6 in 2005) and Paolo Vidoz in his last fight, when he captured the vacant European belt he was to defend against Harrison (a 12-round UD win for the Pole back in December).
Sosnowski can fight then, but is he good enough to beat even an aging Vitali Klitschko? Although it’s likely Harrison – who will surely have a binding contract in his hand right now which proves how Sosnowski signed to fight him – will refuse to take this news lying down, it’s easy to see why Sosnowski took his big chance – and who can blame him?
Harrison, who will now have to look elsewhere as he attempts to further rebuild his career, has yet to comment on the situation
