By Brian Landry: When you think you’ve seen it all…WBC President Jose Suliaman has trumped any of his previous ludicrous comments or decisions. If you were the President of any boxing council, organization, association, WHATEVER, what would be the one thing you would supposedly want over anything else? Anything? If I were in Suliaman’s position, I would surely wish for the best boxers to fight for my title over anything else. Is that not that point of having a world championship in the first place?
Below is a letter sent to Devon Alexander from Sulaiman this week. Words cannot describe the lunacy of this recent Jose Sulaiman filth. Who does he think he is? His continual watering-down of meaningful titles is nothing short of selfish is one thing, but the following is nothing short of pure lunacy:
“I read today in the papers that you want to fight Timothy Bradley for the WBO championship. I appreciate the information and I kindly ask you to immediately present the resignation to the WBC championship, as it seems that our organization is not up to your stature as a boxer. The WBC green and gold belt has been the dream of many boxers in the world, but apparently it is not yours. I will be waiting for your resignation and may you have good luck in your fight.” (Source: ESPN.com)
Assuming you’ve re-read the passage to make sure this is for real (as I surely did), such statements are shocking, even to those who are familiar with Sulaiman’s continual disregard for logic.
Imagine being Timothy Bradley and reading this letter. Years of dedication, sacrifice, hard work, the list goes on…for what? For a title whose President wants to take from you because he wants to fight the best! Give me a break! Alexander isn’t behind on any mandatory challenges and hasn’t said a word hinting that he wouldn’t fulfill mandatory requirement.
What’s going on here? Even Jose Sulaiman could not honestly think anyone would actually believe his reasoning behind stripping Alexander of his title. As Dan Rafael said in his article, I hope Devon refuses to relinquish his title and takes Sulaiman’s butt to court. There is blatantly some ulterior motive behind his decision to strip Devon of his title. Did Sulaiman make a deal for two other fighters to fight for the title? It’s hard to think of any other reasons for such a decision, which is not surprising sense – IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!
