Sam Sexton says he’ll retire Danny Williams – and then heavyweight legend Evander Holyfield. Sexton takes on Williams in a challenge for the British title at West Ham’s Upton Park football ground on May 15. It forms part of the bumper undercard to Kevin Mitchell’s interim WBO World Lightweight title challenge against Michael Katsidis. And Sexton knows that if he comes through, he might get a crack at four-time world heavyweight champion Holyfield. Last week, the Real Deal’s management team said that Sexton had been shortlisted as a possible opponent for Holyfield this summer..
The American defeated Francois Botha at the weekend in Las Vegas with an eighth-round stoppage to ensure the fight remains a possibility.
“Being linked to a fight with Holyfield shows that my name is beginning to be know by the big boys,” said Sexton.
“I’ve got a great chance to build on my reputation when I fight Danny Williams on on May 15.
“Everyone in the States knows him as the man who beat Mike Tyson and fought Vitali Klitschko, so when I’ve knocked him out, they’ll know all about me as well.
“Danny’s been a great champion but it’s time for the next generation to come through.
“Danny has said that he’s going to pack it in after this fight, but I’ll send him into retirement off the back of a loss, not a victory.”
And Sexton, the 25-year-old Commonwealth champion, has got a similar message for Holyfield.
“I’d take that fight in a heartbeat,” he said. “When I was growing up, Holyfield was one of my heroes.
“To have the chance to share the ring with him would be the opportunity of a lifetime.
“He showed at the weekend that he’s still dangerous and he’s still got a punch.
“But I’d be too fast, too fit and too fresh for him.
“If his management don’t want to keep him on course for a world title shot, then they best steer clear of me.
“To be honest, if I fought him the next step for him afterwards would be retirement. I just don’t see what he’s got to beat me and I’ll knock him out as well.”
