UK Boxing: Frank Maloney; Concepcion vs Hammond; Marianne Marston

FRANK MALONEY is working a 15 hour day as he bids to put Rendall Munroe on top of the boxing world and get himself elected to the Houses of Parliament. The promoter stages a major fight card at Coventry Skydome on Friday April 23 when Leicester’s Munroe meets Mexican Victor Terrazas in a WBC world super-bantamweight title eliminator. If Munroe wins he is guaranteed a crack at Japanese WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka later this year. Ambitious Maloney is chasing his own political dreams by standing as a candidate for UKIP at next month’s general election..

Maloney believes he can deliver a KO blow to Barking’s current MP Margaret Hodge and extreme right wing BNP leader Nick Griffin.

And although he is a political underdog, Maloney believes the constituents will put an X next to his name when the nation goes to the polls on Thursday May 6.

Maloney explained: “It is non-stop with the big boxing card in Coventry and the election, but it will all be worth it.

“I dream of being elected and Rendall coming to the Houses of Parliament as my guest with a WBC world title belt wrapped around his waist.”

Maloney’s day starts at 5am and it is 11pm before he finally hits the pillow for a few hours sleeps.

He explained: “I am working flat out for 15 hours from 5am in the morning.

“I get back home at 8pm and spend a couple of hours with the family, but even then I am making matches for promotions and discussing politics with my UKIP team.

“People might know me well enough in boxing, but politics is something close to my heart and I have been looking for a general election seat to contest ever since as I stood as a candidate in the London Mayoral Elections in 2004.

“I finished fourth then behind the three main parties, but the people of Barking have been neglected by the government for years and I believe I will be a voice for them when I am elected.”

CONCEPCION-HAMMOND WINNER TO FACE BRITISH CHAMP

MARTIN CONCEPCION or Kevin Hammond could be in line for a shock crack at British light-middleweight champion Sam Webb.

The pair box a return on Frank Maloney’s big bill at Coventry Skydome on Friday April 23 with Concepcion’s Midlands area title on the line.

When they clashed in February Leicester’s Concepcion (16-7) took a controversial 97-96 points decision after a brutal ten rounder.

Lincoln’s Hammond (8-2) has vowed to get revenge and Webb will be a ringside spectator for one of British boxing’s biggest nights of 2010.

Promote Frank Maloney said: “Their first fight was torrid and if next week’s ten rounder is another war then the winner deserves something.

“I will make an immediate request to the British Boxing Board of Control for the winner to get a crack at Sam late this summer.

“Sam will be at ringside to see them go at each other again and is willing to face the winner in a voluntary defence.”

Ringside opinion was divided after the first fight and Maloney says it was impossible to split them.

Boxing News editor, Tris Dixon wrote: “I had Hammond winning seven of the ten sessions and even though Concepcion boxed smartly on occasions Hammond’s aggression was effective.”

Dixon’s comments led to a letter of complaint to the trade paper from Concepcion’s corner man, and the latest fight promise to be just as keenly fought.

Top of Maloney’s blockbuster bill is Rendall Munroe’s WBC world super-bantamweight title final eliminator against Mexicanstar Victor Terrazas.

The winner is guaranteed a crack at Japan’s formidable world title holder Toshiaki Nishioka later this year.

Also on the talent crammed bill is unbeaten Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries who faces iron chinned Welshman Nathan King.

Tickets are on sale, prices £30, £50 and £70 by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling 0871 226 1508. Boxers on the bill are also selling tickets

Marston Launches Female Boxing Classes Across London

Female professional boxer Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston announced this week the launch of her new website – www.womensboxingclasses.com – as well as a series of boxing, and boxing based fitness, classes at The Boxing Clinic in Islington, North London and The Tokei Gym in Southwark, South London.

In 2009 Marianne, the protégé of Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier, returned home to London following two years being based in Philadelphia, PA, USA, where she is part of Cruiserweight Champion of the World Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s professional boxing team, and noticed that the only type of Boxing fitness programmes being offered to women in London were of the aerobic ‘Boxercise’ type.

The Boxing Fitness classes Marianne created, are far removed from the aerobic ‘Boxercise’ classes offered by most fitness centres and personal trainers. These classes are the real deal and include many of the conditioning exercises and boxing drills she personally uses in her own, and athlete clients, competition preparations.

Taking a little time out from her personal training regime Marianne said. “The recent announcement that Women’s Boxing will be included in the London 2012 Olympics has led to a substantial increase in the number of females actively participating in the sport. It is estimated that there are now in excess of 700 amateur, in addition to the 16 currently licensed professional, female boxers.

It has also led to an increased interest, by women, in boxing as a fitness exercise. I’m not just talking about the highly popular ‘Boxercise’ programmes, I mean actual boxing.

The classes I’ve created are 100% pure boxing skills and professional athlete level conditioning drills. Each class includes many elements of the regimes I have been put through when being coached in Philadelphia; Firstly, by Joe and Marvis Frazier and more recently with Nazeem Richardson, Shar’ron Baker and Steve Cunningham.

The benefits of real Boxing routines, over ‘Boxercise’ and other aerobic exercise, is that they are over 60% anaerobic, which is far more effective for both weight loss and body toning. Other benefits are increased cardiovascular function and muscle mass as well as improved strength, power and speed.”

Women’s Boxing Classes by Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston take place at The Boxing Clinic, 29 St Albans Place, Islington, London N1 0NX, on Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6.30pm and from Monday 19th April at The Tokei Gym, 28 Magdalen Street, Southwark, London SE1 2EN on Monday and Wednesday evening at 6.00pm.
