Markussen headlines first TV 2 Fight Night
Herning (15.04.2010) – Rudy Markussen (33-2, 20 KOs) will make his long-awaited return to the ring on May 15 when MCH Herning will host the historic first-ever TV 2 Fight Night. The former European Super-Middleweight Champion will be in action for the first time since October 2006. He has passed all medicals and received a license from the Danish Professional Boxing Federation (DPBF). Markussen will take on Ilir Mustafa (27-10, 17 KOs). “I am thrilled to be back,” Markussen said. “I have worked hard to stay in perfect shape and I am ready to return to the ring. The TV 2 Fight Night Series promises to provide fantastic entertainment for sports fans all over Denmark and I am honoured to headline in the first show of this groundbreaking series.”
In January, Team Sauerland and TV 2 announced their innovative concept to lift Danish professional boxing to a new level. Further to Markussen, lightweight hopefuls Kim Poulsen (12-1, 3 KOs) and Kaspar Bruun (5-0, 2 KOs) as well as middleweight talent Patrick Nielsen (3-0, 2 KOs) will make regular appearances on the TV 2 shows.
Meanwhile, Nisse Sauerland will spearhead Team Sauerland´s expansion, assuming command of the Fight Night activities. Like his brother Kalle, he has inherited the love for boxing from his father, Hall-of-Fame Promoter Wilfried Sauerland. Over the last few years, Nisse has worked closely with General Manager Chris Meyer, Sports Director Hagen Doering as well as the entire Sauerland-Team, getting a feel for the boxing business. “We will combine Team Sauerland´spromotional know-how and TV 2´s marketing power to find the next Danish superstar,” Nisse Sauerland said. “We are thrilled to stage the historic first-ever TV 2 Fight Night in Herning. There is so much talent in Danish boxing and this great series will showcase it. Rudy Markussen is a hell of a fighter and we will pave his way back to the top, starting with a KO victory over Mustafa on May 15.”
Georg Soerensen, CEO of MCH Herning, is equally excited about the Fight Nightconcept – and Markussen´s return. “After hosting two Kessler fights, we now look forward to another great night of world-class boxing in Herning,” said Soerensen.
“Rudy Markussen is an exciting boxer and together with the boxing fans in Denmark we will support him as he starts his way back to the top.”
Frederik Lauesen, TV 2 Head of Sport, added: “The TV 2 Fight Nights will revolutionise Danish professional boxing. Together with Team Sauerland, we look forward to presenting the first of many exciting boxing shows. May 15th will mark the beginning of something great.”

Billy Lyell Returns May 7th on www.NESportsTV.com PPV
$8 UDS (International Conversion Rates Apply)
Former world title challenger and John Duddy conqueror Billy Lyell (21-8, 4 KO’s) makes his return to the ring on www.NESportsTV.com PPV on Friday May 7th live from Morgantown, West Virginia. The fight will be available both live and on demand for $8 USD (international conversion rates apply) and can be preordered now by visiting the website.
Lyell, a frequent sparring partner of middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and junior middleweight contender Harry Joe Yorgey, gained notoriety in 2009 after winning a decision over the previously unbeaten Irish middleweight John Duddy in a stunning upset in Newark, New Jersey. Lyell followed that career best win with a 2nd round TKO over Ohio journeyman Chris Overbey and 8 round decision over Louisiana’s Chris Gray.
Those performances set Lyell up for a shot at IBF middleweight titleholder Sebastian Sylvester. Lyell took the title fight with Sylvester on less than two weeks notice and was TKO’d in the 10th round of a hard fought bout. Lyell took the fight after original challenger Pablo Navascues had to pull out due to testing positive for a banned substance.
Lyell has also been in the ring with current junior middleweight contender Vanes Matirosyan, James Kirkland and former world champion Yory Boy Campas. He is trained by Youngstown, Ohio’s Jack Loew and currently lives in Niles.
His opponent and supporting bouts for May 7th will be announced soon.
