Universum-middleweight Sebastian Zbik defeated challenger Domenico Spada in a rematch at the “Universum Champions-Night” in Magdeburg, Germany. WBC-interim titleholder Zbik scored a unanimous decision victory over Italian Spada. Nine months ago, Zbik, from Schwerin, Germany, won the championship with a razor thin decision over Spada. The rematch was the second title defense for the 28-years-old Zbik. “Zbiker” controlled the action from the get-go and outboxed his foe using his quick hands and better technique. Spada tried to connect with wild attacks but seldom had success. Zbik improved his defense since their first outing and caught his challenger with clean counter punches..
In round four, the German suffered two cuts, one at his nose and one over his left eye, after both fighters collided with their heads, resulting in a point deduction for Spada. It was a tough moment for Sebastian Zbik, who had some trouble in the fifth but returned to form in round six when he regained his composure and continued to outbox his Italian challenger. Zbik stunned Spada for the first time of the night with an accurate right hand in round seven. Sebastian Zbik was in command of the fight afterwards while Spada had little to no success in trying to score the upset. Therefore, the decision was just a formality. The three judges scored the bout 117-110 and 116-111 twice for the defending champion. Sebastian Zbik moves to 28-0 and is now eyeing a bout against regular WBC beltholder Kelly Pavlik from the United States. Domenico Spada falls to 30-3.
WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (38-2, 23 KOs) retained his world title with a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten and very game WBO #2 rated Eduard “Eddy” Gutknecht (18-1, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Bordelandhalle in Magdeburg, Germany. After a rousing start, Stieglitz amped up the pressure and Gutknecht responded, resulting in some excellent exchanges. As the bout progressed, however, the champion’s pressure began to take its toll as Stieglitz clearly forged ahead, although the challenger still had his moments. Both were still giving their all in the championship rounds with Stieglitz trying hard for the late KO. In the end, Stieglitz prevailed by scores of 119-108, 117-111, 117-110. Great fight!
