by James Slater – Poland’s talented Tomasz Adamek, fresh off his impressive points win over the much bigger Chris Arreola, held a conference call yesterday, and during it the warrior known as “Goral” made it clear he wants a heavyweight title shot in his next fight – tentatively set for either late summer or early autumn.
Having already captured titles at light-heavyweight and cruiserweight, the 33-year-old is now 3-0(1) in his heavyweight campaign and the 41-1(27) contender says he is ready for either world heavyweight ruler; be it WBC king Vitali Klitschko, Ring magazine, IBF and WBO boss Wladimir Klitshko or WBA ruler David Haye. Adamek did add that a fight with Haye is one that he is one-hundred-percent sure he would win..
“I am ready for everybody,” Adamek said. “I am positive if the fight with David Haye comes to fruition, two things, speed and my precision, will prevail. So this will be a very interesting fight. It will be a very exciting fight.”
According to Yahoo Sports, promoter Kathy Duva said there is some interest in a Haye-Adamek title fight, and that HBO has indicated it would like the fight to take place.
Of course, HBO has also had talks regarding a possible Haye-Wladimir Klitschko fight, and it will be interesting to see which fight happens – Haye-Klitschko, or Haye-Adamek. If it’s the former, Adamek, who says he would have no qualms in doing so, could maybe challenge WBC ruler Vitali Klitschko. Either way, it seems Adamek, a breath of fresh air as far as today’s heavyweight division is concerned, WILL get a shot against someone. And the win over the powerful Arreola suggests he may even have a good shot at winning it.
Personally, I feel the best option for the “small” heavyweight would be a fight with Haye, who, of course, also came up from the 200-pound ranks. While I feel the two Klitschko brothers would simply be too big, too powerful and too strong for Adamek, I also feel he would have a real chance at taking “The Hayemaker’s” belt. I’m not saying it would be in any way easy – far from it – but with his speed, chin and boxing brain, Adamek, who has only been beaten by Chad Dawson, down at 175-pounds, would give Haye real problems.
It does seem as though another fight against a contender, so as to further acclimatise himself to his new weight class, will not happen. Adamek wants a title fight and he wants one now. Is he rushing things a touch? Or at age 33 and after having compiled a very impressive record is Adamek ready, as he says, for “everybody?”
Adamek has certainly been active, having had four fights inside the last ten months. “Goral” is in danger of putting all the other top-ranked heavies to shame with such a work-rate!
