by James Slater – It looks as though the hugely intriguing, must-win for both men, clash between Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham will be put back to the month of September this year at the earliest. The next step for both super-middleweight warriors in their attempt at winning the exciting “Super-Six” tournament, Froch and Abraham were originally set to face one another in August.
However, according to This Is Nottingham.com, 32-year-old Froch, coming off his close points loss to Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler, needs further time for the cuts he picked up in the April 24th war to sufficiently heal. According to the Nottingham news source, “The Cobra” is also in need of treatment for eye and ear problems (Froch went into the Kessler fight with a perforated left eardrum; an injury he subsequently said caused him to suffer some balance problems in the epic fight).
This news isn’t really too surprising, considering how brutal and damaging the Froch-Kessler fight was. After having picked up all the cuts and bruises he did, should we really have expected Froch to box again a mere four months later? Needing at least an additional month to get ready, Froch is reportedly also still hoping that the fight will wind up taking place in the U.K. While a compromise of holding the fight in Switzerland was thought to have been reached (Abraham, coming off his DQ loss to Andre Dirrell, wants the fight to be held in Berlin, Germany), Froch hasn’t actually said yes to Switzerland; according to This is Nottingham, anyway.
Not only that, but the new source feels Froch is never likely to be in favour of the fight being held there. Froch remains hopeful the fight can go ahead in his home town of Nottingham; preferably inside a large football stadium so as to accommodate all those fans craving a ticket.
Wherever the anticipated battle takes place, those fans anxious to see it will now have to wait at least four more weeks for the opening bell of what many feel will be an even greater fight than Kessler-Froch. Though he has not yet made any public comment on his next fight being postponed, it’s more than possible that Abraham, having also had a tough time last time out, will be glad of the extra time himself.
Wherever it is that this match-up finally takes place, a sell-out crowd is almost a certainty.
