Super Channel, Canada’s only national pay television network is pleased to announce it will air Troy Ross vs. Steve “USS” Cunningham LIVE in vivid HD Saturday, June 5 at 1 p.m. ET.
Canada’s Ross (23-1, 16 KOs), a two-time Olympian, best known for winning the 2009 edition of “The Contender” reality series, takes on former Cruiserweight World Champion Steve “USS” Cunningham direct from Neubrandenburg, Germany..
“This is a chance of a lifetime for Troy and we are confident he will win the title,” said Yvon Michel of GYM promotions. “With the fight being in Germany we believe it will be an even playing field for both.”
Michel said Ross was not concerned about traveling for the bout because three of his “Contender” bouts took place in Singapore and he has fought around the world as an amateur.
“He is very skilled, powerful and mature,” Michel said of Ross. “We know Steve Cunningham and we have a lot of respect for him. It is going to be a very spectacular and contested fight but Troy will prevail.”
Added Michel: “We are very pleased that we were able to come to an agreement with Super Channel to broadcast such a fantastic world championship event. It is great to see that Super Channel continues to support Canadian fighters and boxing as a whole.”
In the other co-main event bout, also to be aired on Super Channel, IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester faces mandatory challenger Roman Karmazin. The undercard features heavyweights – Oleg Platov vs Kubrat Pulev.
Patience key for unbeaten featherweight Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard
MANCHESTER, Conn. (May 17, 2010) – Patience is the key for undefeated NABF champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, who is preparing to defend his belt as well as fight for the vacant NABO title, Saturday night (May 22) against Carlos “El Rayo” Rivera at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Remillard, rated No. 8 by the World Boxing Council, understands the business of boxing and, at the tender age of 23, he realizes his time will come. “Hey, I’ll fight anybody, anytime,” the WBC’s No. 1 ranked American featherweight said. “I also know everything has to be right to put an undefeated fighter in a big fight — money and television. My opportunity is coming, hopefully within the next year, and I will be ready. I just need to be patient.
“My weight class is filled with action-packed fighters and for me to be rated No. 8 and the top American is an honor. I can’t wait to prove that I belong by fighting a top 10-rated fighter. I leave all that to my promoter (TKO Promotions) and manager (Bret Hallenbeck). If I just continue doing what I’m doing, I’m golden.”
The reigning WBA featherweight champion is Elio “The Kid” Rojas (21-1, 13 KOs) and No. 1 contender Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez (44-4, 32 KOs) faces rival Rafael Marquez for the fourth time May 22 in Los Angeles. The other top rated WBC featherweight contenders ranked ahead of Remillard are, in order, No. 2 Juan Carlos “Miniburgos” Burgos (24-0, 17 KOs), No. 3 Jhonny Gonzalez (43-7, 37 KOs), No. 4 Cholatarn O. Piriyapinyo (33-0, 19 KOs), No. 5 Justin “Le Malin” Savi (24-0, 16 KOs), No. 6 “Doctor” Oleg Yefimovych (18-1, 11 KOs), and No. 7 Daniel Ponce de Leon (39-2, 32 KOs).
Before Remillard gets his career-defining fight, he has to get past Rivera (16-4-2, 5 KOs), a crafty veteran from Florida. “Rivera’s fought some good fighters,” Remillard noted. “He’s tough and always comes to fight. I’m prepared to go all 10 rounds, if needed, and take home both title belts.”
Home, for Matt, is Manchester (CT), not very far from Mohegan Sun. “I’ve built-up a good fan-base fighting in New England and Mohegan Sun has become my second home,” Matt concluded. “It’s a beautiful venue with a great atmosphere and fans have been coming out to watch me and Peter (Manfredo, Jr. who fights Angel Hernandez in the May 22 main event, Remillard-Rivera is the co-feature) fight there. JOEY GILBERT – “SINK OR SWIM” MAY 22ND
May 18th, 2010, RENO – Former NABO, USNBC middleweight champion, and Contender season one alum, Joey Gilbert (18-2, 14KOs), will be returning to the ring on May 22nd at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno against tough veteran Anthony “Powerhouse” Bartinelli (20-13-2, 13 KOs).
Gilbert, who is coming off of an impressive stoppage victory of Ivan Stovall, looks to put his name at the top of the middleweight rankings once again. He turns 34 in June and realizes that the clock is ticking.
“This will be sink or swim for me.” Says Gilbert. “I have to perform well. I have to win on May 22nd in order to earn the chance to fight the bigger fights. This is my last run at it.”
Although Gilbert is coming off of a win, this will be his first fight back in his hometown since losing to local rival Jesse Brinkley in February of 2009. Brinkley, who is currently the IBF super-middleweight mandatory contender, beat Gilbert in a one-sided unanimous decision. Since then, he has changed his team, refreshed his outlook on boxing, and rededicated his efforts to becoming the best fighter he can be. In the only other loss of his career, Gilbert was on the wrong end of a close split-decision when his fight was prematurely stopped due to a cut caused by an accidental headbutt against world title challenger, Peter Manfredo Jr.
Anthony Bartinelli promises to be a test for Joey Gilbert. With a similar fighting style, the tough journeyman from Phoenix looks at this fight as his chance to gain the recognition he has never received.
“This could be a big break for me.” Says Bartinelli. “I’ve wanted this fight before, and I’m thankful to have it now.”
Both fighters find themselves at a crossroads. On May 22nd, it may be decided who continues down the path towards bigger and better things, and who will find themselves at a dead-end. The Gilbert vs. Bartinelli fight is scheduled for eight rounds.

BRANDON “FLAWLESS” GONZALES RETURNS TO THE RING MAY 22
May 17th, 2010, RENO – Undefeated rising star, Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales (11-0, 9 KOs – middleweight), steps back into the ring against Mexico’s Victor Hugo Correa (12-4, 7 KOs) on May 22 at the Grand Sierra Resort.
Gonzales, who joined the Let’s Get It On Promotions team last fall, is looking to remain undefeated and continue his dominance over those that have chosen to fight him. He is coming off of an impressive eight round unanimous decision victory against the talented Darnell Boone in March. Correa is coming off of two wins in his native Mexico.
