In a clash of undefeated welterweights, Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KOs) from Palm Springs, Cal., makes his HBO debut in his own backyard, taking on Luis Carlos Abregu (29-0, 23 KOs), Argentina’s top-rated contender, in a scheduled 12-round, 147-pound bout. Notorious for his ferocity, Bradley is a relentless puncher whose lighting speed, huge overhand right and iron chin make a daunting combination. In recent fights with Junior Witter and Kendall Holt, Bradley took the best shots of both former beltholders on the chin but refused to be denied, responding with whirlwinds of vicious body shots and tireless footwork that brought him victories.
Former South American welterweight champ Abregu faces the toughest test of his career. He enters the fight riding a wave of success, with victories over Richard Gutierrez, Diego Gallardo, Irving Garcia, Americo Rodolfo Sagania and David Estrada that have made him a world-rated contender. Boasting blindingly quick hands and a devastating right hook, Abregu is known for incredible speed and unbridled energy, which enable him to wear his opponents down and save his best boxing for the final rounds.
The co-main event is a junior middleweight slugfest slated for ten rounds, pitting top 154-pound prospect Alfredo Angulo (18-1,15 KOs) of Coachella, Cal., against former middleweight champ Joachim Alcine (32-1, 19 KOs) of Montreal. Quickly becoming a fan favorite, fast-rising young star Angulo returns to BOXING AFTER DARK after knocking out Joel Julio in April. Over a long and distinguished career, savvy veteran Alcine has displayed exceptional boxing instincts and very quick hands, and will counter Angulo’s youthful speed and energy with battle-tested experience and patience.
