By James Slater – More bad news for pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather Junior. Hot on the heels of his insulting homemade video attack on Manny Pacquiao (remarks on the video subsequently apologised for by the 33-year-old boxing star), comes news of how Mayweather is a suspect in a domestic violence attack on the mother of three of his children.
According to The Grand Rapids Press, police were this morning called to a house in Las Vegas, when Josie Harris, Floyd’s former girlfriend, reported how the boxer had assaulted her. Police reportedly arrived at the house in Tropical Vine Street in Las Vegas, but when they got there Mayweather was not present in the home..
The police went to check out a reported case of domestic battery, and the authorities are anxious to speak with Mayweather so as “to get his side of the story,” so said Bill Cassell, a public info officer with Las Vegas Metro (as quoted by Grand Rapids Press).
Apparently, Harris was treated in hospital for “minor injuries,” before being released. Back in 2005, before he had achieved mega-star status, Mayweather was in trouble for allegedly assaulting the same woman, but Harris subsequently withdrew her accusations of Mayweather having hit and kicked her outside a nightclub two years earlier. Had Mayweather been found guilty back in 2005, he would likely have served at least some jail time.
The Grand Rapids press reports that telephone calls to Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe were today unanswered. Mayweather, meanwhile, needs to get in touch with the police so as to explain what happened.
So, his boxing and public relations problems aside, Mayweather is in enough hot water right now due to this latest piece of unpleasant news. Should Floyd actually go to prison, all talk of his ever fighting again will become the last thing that concerns him.
It will of course be interesting to hear what “Money” has to say about these serious accusations. Mayweather was able to talk his way out of trouble for the video in which he verbally attacked Pacquiao (although he did lose a couple of lucrative sponsorship deals due to his offensive, racist and homophobic outbursts), but this new episode in his rapidly unravelling private life is, needles to say, of a far more serious nature.
